Coupler maintenance

Postby asianflava » Thu May 22, 2008 1:35 am

When we got the tear out of storage, I had some difficulty getting it hitched to the ball. I had to hook it up today and had a really hard time getting the clamp to stay open wide enough for the ball to go in. I took it apart and found the top spring to be compressed, I opened up the spring a bit and it seemd to work.

My question is, how tight do you tighten the self locking nut underneath? I just tightened it to where 2 threads are exposed, which is standard for any self locking nut.

Stick a ball in there and tighten it untill you just feel resistance when closing it, then back off just a little. As the coupler wears, it will need adjustment.

As G-force explained, the nut is to adjust the coupler for wear to fit the ball. The number of exposed threads past the nut is irrelevant, as long as there are some (so the locking part of the nut is gripping). The self-locking nut is used so that it can be set where ever it needs to be to make the ball fit.

Also store coupler in released position so springs are not compressed for long periods of time...
