Camp ADK TearUP Spring 2005

Dave,

We can't make it this year, but sure hope to be there next year. I am still waiting on my trailer registration so that I can start putting the Cubby build on it. Can only do a few things to get prepared for now. If I get it done, I still can't go because my nephew is getting married (in Syracuse, NY) and I will be almost there, but sadly cannot go the rest of the way.

There should be lots more opportunities to get together in the future, I hope and am looking forward to meeting everyone. Until then, CHEERS and hope everyone has a geat time.

Great to see the countdown go under 50. We are eager and ready.

We made our first teardrop extended road trip Easter week. Pulled the trailer to southern KY and northern TN. Camped 10 nights in Cumberland Falls State Park, and both the KY and TN campgrounds in the Big South Fork National Rec Area. We spent most days hiking and trying to soak up early signs of spring.

Our biggest observation of teardrop vs. tent camping was that we did not hesitate to move on every few days. Much faster than pitching tent, rolling out pads & sleeping bags, etc. Also, sleeping above ground on cool rainy nights beats the ground anyday. (But we had been happy tent campers for decades!)

We also had two beautiful weekend trips to Indiana state parks - Pokagon and Chain 0'Lakes. Temperatures were in the 70's with clear skies. However, last weekend our luck came to an end as we had 8" of snow in Ohio. The tear stayed in the garage. ':cry:' This weekend is up in the air - forecast looks like 50 deg and lots or rain. We'll decide Friday morning. Another nice thing about teardropping is that almost everything is ready to go - just hook up & drive.

Good news/bad news...... Shirley's g'kid is graduating high school Friday night of 'THE WEEKEND'.... Have changed reservations to arrive Sat and leave Tues..

Well 28 days left before the TearUP! Kate and I are headed down to Fish Creek Thursday night to make sure all the campsites are ready for yah'all (and to fill the ponds up with water ). One night camping isn't enough, but we're on our way across to NH to do some skiing so it'll have to do.

Anybody starting packing yet?

By the way Arne.. looks like Alan and Leslie are staying till Tuesday also so you won't be alone with the bears. We'd stay longer, but we have to be back home Monday. We're thinking of going down early though... maybe Wednesday if the weathers nice. I've updated your dates on the participants List.

I was just thinking today that we were getting close. Maybe we should get serious about planning the common meal ??

I am planning to get there on Thursday ( I think!! - I've forgotten) Is the common meal Friday or Saturday?

I was thinking about preparing Thai chicken skewers and freezing them. If the meal is saturday, I am not sure I can keep them frozen long enough for them to be safe. humm??

Good post Gail,as we have been wondering about the pot luck too.
We just got a recipe for Frogmore stew{no frogs were harmed}. It was the hit of a recent kayaking event in SC. we just returned from. There, we fed 20 people,and nothing was left. It contains shrimp,corn on the cob, red potatoes,onions,sausage,old bay seasoning{posted for alergic reactions}. It can be made to serve a lot,or a little. Our do we just want to have a pot luck type supper? Our inquiring minds want to know too. Desserts??

We are all sooooooooooo excited about spring tear up. It is our 1st event and our 1st trip in our new, in progress teardrop, Tom is working very hard on finishing touches, so we will be ready. Our daughter Laura, can't wait to meet you all, she is hopeing to see some animals on our trip. Let us know about the common meal, I am sure I can whip up one of my famous dishes. Ok until then,I am off to Home Depot for some more supplys for Tom and the teardrop.

I like the idea of the stew. Maybe we could split up who is responsible for which ingredients. Would you have a pot big enough to cook a big pot of if?

I have a large dutch oven, the kind with legs that sits in a fire. I'll have to check the size and see if it has a lid!! I've never actually used it, it was a gift from my brother long ago.

We could also have people share appetizers, salads, desserts, etc.

Hi all,

We were going to do the Frogmore stew as our part of a pot luck. We have a 16 qt pot that will make enough for 10 people. If everyone brings something for the main course,what we make may be enough,since everyone will not eat all that is brought. We brought Pa. Dutch shoo-fly pies,and they were a huge hit at South Carolina. If you never had one, its made from premium flys{just kidding} . Really they have a base like a pecan pie,with cake middle,and cinnamon crumb topping. We can bring 3,and that's enough for 24 people. Any ideas for other main courses?

I think I want to do small shish kabobs. I can cook them in small batches so they will be hot when people eat them. I'd also like to add a fruit salad.

Just back from a combo campout/ski weekend. Actually it was a hike/ski/shop weekend which we extended by leaving a day early and camping at Fish Creek one night. With the Spring TearUP loaming I thought I would inspire all those who are going with a few photos.

Naturally at this time of the year you have your choice of prime sites. We chose site 103 which has a great few across Fish Creek Pond and of the mountains. A 3/4+ moon was a bonus. Black Flys were just starting. I managed just fine in shorts and a Tshirt...





Then there was the skiing (Tuckerman Ravine NH)...

Donna and I went to Lake Placid for the weekend-moteled it.....We stopped at the CranberryLake Campgrounds and the BLACK FLYS were REALY bad.....Murry the caretaker for the park said that he hadn't seen them that bad in at least 5 years....In and around Lake Placid they weren't that bad

Its funny... we stopped at a few places in the ADK and some places no flys, other places just swarms of them. No worry though... by the time were back there for the TearUP they should be gone.

Hope you enjoyed Lake Placid! We love it there!

Hey all,

We're going to have to bow out this year. Miranda, Desa, and I were looking forward to meeting everyone. A couple of events that have been scheduled that weekend, which we really shouldn't try to get out of.

Summer sure fills up. Book something almost a year ahead and still can't make it.

I've cancelled my reservation for site 192.

Bummer Shil... hopefully we'll cross paths in Ontario though, or Fish Creek another time. Let us know of any other camping plans your have for Ontario/NY in the future.
