Has Anyone Made Improvements On A Little Guy Galley

Postby scott and becky » Sun Jun 08, 2008 12:30 pm

Has any one made improvements in the Little Guy Galley?
I have a 2007 Little Guy Sport 6' Wide. The galley is nothing special. It's not much more than shelf with hinges that allows it to be raised for access to the end of the bed.
I have a couple of problems.
1. The shelf won't hold alot of weight. It's fastened at the back with four small hinges and has a hollow 1"aluminum bar that goes under the center of it. There is also a slinding lock latch on the right side to keep it from bouncing up and down.(I put 2 2 1/2 gallon bottles of water back there. It tore the hinges out and the shelf collapsed!).
2.The shelf dosn't go all the way to the back of the trailer. There is a 4" gap between the shelf and the end of the trailer. If I spill or drop something when I'm cooking it goes on to the bed below!
I have a picture of the galley in my Album.

Scott

I bought my Little Guy without a galley (mine is a 4-wide).

If I were to buy a LG 6-wide, the first thing I would do is take out the galley, and build a new one. The problems you described are the reasons why I would do that.

LG makes a nice TD, overall, but the galleys are the weak link in the chain. They are not well designed, and not built as well as the rest of the TD.

I started with just a simple galley enclosure made with the same Birch plywood as LG uses on the side walls...

Later, I added air-conditioning to my TD which ate up some galley space, but works well here in Texas. If you can do without AC where you live and camp, you'll have a lot more room for galley stuff.

Then came a side table...

Then a bigger side table and a good stove...

I'm pretty happy with it they way it is now. But, who knows what I might do next.

I'll bet there's a lot you could do with that... but here, let me post your picture to get the ideas going...

The forum is pretty quite this week-end- many are out camping. But, I doubt Lil Guys really think you use the "galley". You could buy one of coleman's kitchen shelf/tables or some folks have built a boy scout camp box that has legs - maybe one of the administrators can find that thread.

It's a great trailer - did you just buy it? Looks like you are having fun.

I like Mike's renovation alot! Especially if you do short camping - you can just open it up and you are ready to cook.

The Picture Mike put up is of the stock LG galley. Notice how the countertop bows down in the middle. And, there is a gap for food to fall down and beverages to spill though (and critters to get through) between the countertop and the back of the TD.

That is so impressive, Caseydog!

Would be fun to customize the LG galley.

Not terribly difficult, either. I bought mine without carpeted walls, too, but you can cut some of that out to accommodate new structural elements.

My sleeping compartment walls are birch, too, with the same pale golden finish.

For about 100 bucks worth of supplies, and a weekend of work, one could easily make significant improvements to the galley of a Little Guy, IMO.

Marilyn,

Was it this one?

That's where our own Raprap gave a link to sources for a couple of Scout patrol box designs:

Yes, thanks. I don't think I would like this alternative as much as a galley. But I have used a campbox before and it's all in what works for you.

Thanks for the pictures and ideas! Keep them coming! We are buying a kitchen from Cabela's but Becky wants a microwave and fridge in the back of the Little Guy! I've got my work cut out for me! ;)

The fridge is going to eat up some space. And, that curved hatch is going to limit your space for that fridge. Good luck with that one.

A Microwave should fit in fine, although there is something about a microwave oven and camping that seems a little contradictory to me.

 Way to go Caseydog. The Little Guy has always bugged me how artifical it was and the wood really warmed it up. (I know I like a wazat and they are even more artifical but for some reason the LG has always bugged me). It made a big difference.
