General Discussion about almost anything Teardrop or camping related

thanks packerz4, I will direct the suggestion/comment to the factory. The best designs come from end users, not in-house engineers. :D

Yes.....ahem, I sort of got sidetracked for the last couple of months on this Modernistic project, however; the modernistic galley has a similar shape and size to the 4 wide littleguy. The modifications in the photos below would also work in the Little Guy 4 or 6 wides. We are working up some aftermarket galleys for these trailers when we get back from an extensive Road Test of the 1947 Cub.

With a little thought and a lot of elbow grease you can fit just about anything you need into one of these.

Deserthawk,
Thanks for the ideas and pictures! I'm going to start work on a new counter top tomarrow for my Little Guy. I'm going to do just a little at a time because I'm no carpenter!

Thanks,
Scott

Has Anyone Made Improvements to the Little Guy Galley

Postby scott and becky » Sat Jun 14, 2008 4:57 pm

I bought a sheet of 3/4" birch plywood at Lowes. I had them cut out 3 sections to make a new counter top in my Little Guy. I wanted to close a gap that allowed things to fall down onto the bed.
I set the center section in just to see how it looked. It fit fine and covered up that gap Little Guy left between the counter and end of the trailer.
Then I tried to close the hatch ... I discovered that the latches on the hatch go into that gap I had just covered up!
I haven't done anything that's not reversible yet. I guess I'll go back to the drawing board.

Check your PM. You just need to cut a couple of slots for the latches.

New Shelf for Little Guy

Postby wlooper89 » Sun Jul 06, 2008 5:26 pm

Hello Scott and Becky, we basically like our Little Guy a lot, but fully agree about the limitations of the galley. Our shelf has started to sag and we no longer carry heavy items on it en route. The trailer bounces a good bit on bumps and I am sure the shelf takes a pounding.

Your idea of the 3/4 plywood replacement and extending it back to fill the gap sounds great. Will you put an additional support under the shelf at the rear of the trailer? Maybe then the square aluminum tube would not be needed. What do you think? Will there still be a gap on the sides with the original fixed part of the shelf, or do you plan to replace that also?

We do like being able to lift the shelf to make up the foot of the bed. We have begun folding the mattress in thirds and pushing it back to load heavy items into the cabin through the doors for towing.

I have been concentrating on electrical upgrades and my album shows some photos of those. But now it is time to sort out the galley. So far we have been cooking at the picnic table or a folding "Camp Kitchen" table we sometimes carry. The galley mostly just holds a microwave oven, although we transport it in the cabin afraid the shelf will not sustain the weight. :o

We love camping with the LG but would like to improve the galley.

The counter sags on everyone I have seen. It just isn't the same level of quality as the basic shell, IMO.

The 3/4-inch birch ply counter I made does not sag at all, but it also does not lift to make the bed. I'm okay with that, but it's not for everyone.

The Little Guy folks surf our forum, so hopefully that will read this thread and make some changes. Are you "Little Guy" guys here?

I'm still working on closing the dreaded gap at the end of the counter!
I cut the main part of the counter 28 1/2" x 62". That brings it all the way out to the end of the trailer. It touches the top of rear of the trailer just a little bit now and feels pretty strong.
That little bit will dissapear when I round the edge and sand it .I plan on cutting two pieces of wood and attaching them to the end of the trailer on the inside(in between the latch pads) for the shelf to rest on.
I want to remove the aluminum bar so I can get larger items through the opening and make it even easier to make the bed!
I think cutting some slots for the latches would be the easiest way to go.
I'm going to work on it some more this week.I'll let you know how it goes!

A new topic called "Little Guy Galley Mod" begun by iOpine has some interesting photos and discussion. I think I will use his idea about a vertical panel at the foot of the bed to support the galley shelf in the rear. I would put it in the same place as the present foot panel so as to not loose sleeping space.

At present I am thinking to replace the present particle board shelf with plywood and use a piano hinge all the way across. The shelf would have the same appearance as stock and still be able to be raised, but would be mostly sealed off from the sleeping area when closed. Some weather stripping on the side edges of the shelf might more completely seal the galley from the sleeping area. A small storage compartment can be made between the tail light area and the new vertical panel.

The vertical panel, between the trailer walls, both supports the galley shelf and seals the galley from the sleeping area. The shelf itself can be either fixed or made to be raised with a more sturdy hinge.

My present plan may change as others are suggested or pop into my mind.

There is a picture in the Hall of Fame titled "Our Little Guy Galley". I'd like to get some info and see some more pictures!
