Building the hatch

I'm building the hatch today. I know I didn't have any problems building my first hatch, so I was not dreading this... however my arms feel like they are ready to fall off already, and I've only cut 4 ribs so far.

The ribs are being cut out of baltic birch plywood, which has 11 plies.

I'll need a total of 7 ribs. The two end ribs will be doubled up, and the remaining ribs will be 1 every 12 inches.

I hope to have the skeleton glued up today, and the outside plywood glued on. Keep your fingers crossed.

Now back to the jig saw!!! :roll:

Looks like it went together very well Mike. Is that 3/4" baltic birch? I use alot of 1/2" baltic birch in the cabinets I build for clients. The more plys is always better. You also have a good looking galley going on.

I didn't know you could see the plies. Yes, that's 11 ply baltic birch!!! I am hoping I don't have any spring back problems. I was fortunate with my first one, but then it was quite a bit smaller!

Baltic birch is a better choice , due to the amount of plies. Also, there are no voids between the plies. The !/2" has 9 plies. I don't think you will have any problems. Baltic birch is going to be my choice for the galley ribs.

I started the hatch on my Teardrop this weekend. I had some engineering bugs to work out.. :idea: .that's almost as much fun as actually building!... That's figured out, so on we go!
As you know, I'm building an all wood "woody"... :wink: I didn't want any extra mouldings or trim, so the hatch and door details were real bugs.
I started actual construction last night!!Here's a detail of my solution.Image
I'm installing the ribs tonight. I just picked up some baltic birch this morning on the way to work...oops, I'm at work, should get going..nah, I'm the boss :twisted:, for the inner skin. The top is gonna be bead and cove strips.

Did you work out the details for the door yet? Do you have a nice pretty drawing like that for the door? I'd be interested in seeing it!

Kwel! as they say...

So you are going to edge seal your doors and door jambs, and stop the weather at the weather stripping.

So what happens if you go winter camping, and rain turns into snow, and the gap between the door and the door jamb fills with ice, which subsequently expands to make it impossible to open that door? :cry:

Okay, so I wanted to have a little fun with that one! :lol:

I did think of that! :roll: I'll just try to avoid getting the doors out in the snow/ice. Maybe keep the trailer under a tarp on winter campouts...Aren't you supposed to be working?? I know I am!! :twisted:

I congradulate you on sawing out ribs, of course, i solved my rib problem by laminating luan and gorilla glue..tuff stuff Image Image
