Roof Rack Instructions & Pics

Can someone tell please me who it was that had instructions and photos for making the roof rack for the tear..

I found a shop here that seems to have all the things I need for making one.

Except Id also like if possible a drawing how to mount them..

I know Rob has one and it is out of copper, and here we have chromed copper to make them out of but maybe the pvc is better?

I,ll figure it out yet, it took me over 6 months to come up with outside decor for the tear so maybe within 6 months I,ll get this figured out too.

Len sure has some nice ones on his, and his trailers are extremely nicely made.

That one is very nice! I would really like one on my TD, but I really hate to punch holes in that large expanse of fiberglass. Maybe after I find a roof vent that I can't live without.
Maybe then I'll get over that phobia.

Finn...I've been thinking about a roof rack also...but was thinking more along the lines of a homebuilt Thule or Yakima design style that I could mount a canoe on...or a set of mountain bikes...or a kayak...or a cargo frame etc. Couple of requirements I would like are 1) to be able to open the vent 2) flexibility to mount a number of accessories depending on the trip...

Hard to describe...but I've actually got some ideas I think that might work on my woodie based on scuppers for lashing that are typically found on canoes....


BTW...Happy Solstice...Marcia and I are camping for night (in a tent) Don't even need a flashlight this time of year!!!

This is a rough picture of a Surco Safari rack on top of a jeep. This and pretty much every other rack I've seen are designed to mount to roof top cross rails. If I was putting a rack on the trailer, I would cut 4 pieces of angle steel that I bolt to the top of the trailer as close to the side wall as possible. These pieces are permanently attached to the trailer creating an upstanding flange and sealed as well as possible. On the bottom of the rack I attach 4 more angle pieces, and cross bars of square tube steel if necessary for strength. The angles on the rack create a down pointing flange. Make the angles on the rack as long as necessary to clear the vent and keep the rack level. The four angles on the rack and the four on the trailer top match up so you can run one or two bolts through each locations. This way you have a removeable rack in case you don't always want it.

Definitely use a strong, but good looking rack.

I wonder if you've got enough room between the vent and galley hinge to put a rack there, nearly flush to the top of the trailer?

Juneaudave, Keep us posted on your rack design when you decide what to build. My hope is to be able to carry a canoe on the TD. Mine is a 5 x 10 fiberglass Yoder Toter and currently has no roof vent...although, I would like to have one. Maybe....suction cups to hold the rack!!!

I welded a flat foot onto the tubing, then screwed a ss screw down into the wood trim. I don't know if this would work with other trim though. My rack is more cosmetic than utilitarian, as I just carry some old luggage on for the "vintage" look, and to provide a frame to mount my side curtain rod to

Also. keep in mine. A roof rack will cut considerably into gas mileage. I talked to a fellow camper at our May outing who had a rack (Yakima I think) last year, but was missing it this year! He stated he gained something like 6 MPG after removing the rack. But cares about mileage, right?
