Anyone found a good EEEPC Forum with Xandros Linux help.

I haven't done console commands in 25 years.

But ... I'm having a ball with it. Wish I had gotten into linux sooner.

I'm bored with XP. I think it's time to put Linux back on the EEE PC. I'm thinking about starting with the full blown version of Xandros. Someone, warn me if I am headed in the wrong direction...

This is out of my league. I tried to install Full Desktop today and failed. Had some error messages.

Will restore to factory settings and try again.

Of course Full Desktop is not full blown Xandros but quite an improvement over the GUI in Easy Desktop.

Watching with interest and once again having "fun" with a computer. "lovin' it"

I suppose worst case scenaro you could load up Ubuntu. But I heard someone write that they didn't like the large dialogs on the small screen. But that may have been the 7" screen.

Mike and Geron, in the blogspot link MrBuzz posted, there's a 'Laptop' mag page where a couple of the editors gave up their respective current notebooks (one a PC, one a Mac) to use the eee PC 700 and 900 respectively. Both of them have links to how to 'unhide' the KDE full desktop for Xandros...it's altered Xandros, but apparently nearly the same as general issue Xandros. Apparently the woman had an easier time of it with the converson on her 900 than the guy had on the 700, but the directions/console commands she linked look like they are a little more straightforward.

Mine's on the way, and I plan to leave it Linux, although I'd like to switch to the KDE desktop bootup. Might as well dust off all of that Unix/Solaris training I did a few years ago. I should know if it's going to make me insane by the weekend.

Mike, there's a link on that blogspot for installing Ubuntu and several other OS over the top of whatever is on the machine--maybe those will help?

I'll be figuring out two new boxes at once (the Vista laptop I bought on Memorial Day weekend is still not exactly the way I want it, and I have files and bookmarks still to copy over and back up.) Configuring two machines with different OS at once--almost like work. Now THAT ought to help me dig my way out of this stupid chemo fog!

Installing Full Desk I corrupted the POST -- I think that's what it is?

Wouldn't boot
Wouldn't F2, TAB, or ESC on bootup. The EEEPC would just power up then die.
Had to do a hard reset -- remove battery/AC. Reset and wait 10 minutes.
Got her to POST then did a complete restore system and she's back up and running.

BE CAREFULL with Sudo Bash in the Console!!!!!!!!

If you want to try Ubuntu, there is a special version of Ubuntu called eeebuntu just for the eee PC.

Also you can install various Linux distro's on SD card and do a BIOS mod so that the eee PC boots off the SD slot.
I gotta get my hands on one of these! I like working with Linux and seeing all the different distros.
Mike: Who has a 7"...I thought everyone so far had bought the 900 - 9" model? And...when you roll yours back to Linux...let me know when you get your USB modem working! I have found a few articles about getting that working...it doesn't look easy, but I guess it can be done.

I'm not real good with linux. I've loaded up a few flavors on my desktop, and plugged in the ethernet cable, and stuff worked. but I've never customized it, and I've never had to hack the hardware to get it to work.

So I can only do this on a weekend, in case I need to get back to XP by Monday, so I can take it back to work.

I bought a copy of Xandros a year or two ago, right when they were releasing 3.0... so I could try loading that. Or I could try the eeebuntu...

Just need the time to do it...

When I first got my EEE PC, I installed Ubuntu on it. I found that a lot of the dialogs were too long for the display, so I reinstalled Xandros from the included CD. I then went to an EEE forum and found an easy way to add the full Xandros menuing to the default. I've been using that ever since and find it quite adequate.

I have been using Linux since 1993, and part of my job involves doing lots of programming stuff for Unix and Linux boxes. Our product ships with a Dell rackmount server loaded with Debian Linux. Boy, do I have fun at work! 8-)

I have my laptop set up to dual-boot, WinXP & Linux. The primary boot is into Linux...right now it's PCLinux2008 Gnome. But I'm probably going to redo that partition and install Ubuntu 8.04...there's just more support for hardware with Ubuntu.
When I'm in a coffee shop or if there is WiFi available I let the laptop boot into Linux. If I'm at home and need to use my cellphone-modem I boot into WinXP.
Currently my work doesn't require any Linux/Unix background...but I have some Unix training. Mostly I've been a Linux hobbyist for many years...and I enjoy seeing a computer operate efficiently instead of laboring to support Windows and all the crap that goes with it.
One of my favorite Linux distro is Puppy Linux. I have that installed on a bootable USB stick. It's such a small footprint, plus it loads everything in RAM...it absolutely flies when run on a late model PC or laptop. When browsing the internet webpages load so fast it's hard to believe.

More notes on my favorite Puppy Linux...
Some clever eee PC users have compiled a version of Puppy Linux for the eee PC...it's called Puppee.
You install it from a PC with a cd drive to a USB drive. The eee then boots from the USB drive so you can leave the standard Linux or XP OS intact.
It has all the correct drivers installed (except the troublesome eee webcam doesn't work).
If you are looking for a new OS to play with and want to see what kind of speed you can get out of the eee with no mods to the original OS this OS sounds like a win-win!
The eee PC is making a lot of waves in the OS market...there is an eee version of PCLinux too.

Now I gotta go and see if I can get the cell modem working.
