A few years ago, I was invited to join my company's team in a multi-sport relay race between Worcester, MA to Pawtuckett, RI. I was assigned to the first leg, a 20 mile road bicycle race. A briefing was held prior to the race. At the briefing, we were told the police would escort the entire field as a group at slow speed, around 8-10 MPH, to the city limits where the race would begin in ernest. There was only one problem. Nobody told the cop.
The moment the race started, the cop hit the gas. Instead of an easy warm-up, we suddenly had a frantic sprint. Each rider jockeyed for position, desparate to stay in the draft of the rider in front of him. Bicycle racing is all about drafting. If you loose the draft, you'll get spit out of the back of the pack with no hope of catching up. After it was all over, the somone joked "This is the first time I ever chased the police instead of the police chasing me".
