TEARDROP WANTED in WESTERN NEW YORK!

Postby aging camper » Thu Jul 03, 2008 1:45 pm

Hi Everyone- Here's my story...I am a camping fan married to a not so happy camper. Over the years we have managed with ME as the pool boy of sorts doing all the work, set up, etc. Well, now I am getting to the age where I just cant really manage it as well, but recently bumped into the teardrop design and said-- that might work! We had a pop up which is too much for me now, and my not so happy camper husband wont tent camp. Cabins are very limiting.

I think he would like :D the teardrop and we could pull it with our 4 wd Rav 4. :applause: The PROBLEM is that they seem almost non- existant here in the Buffalo area. We also don't have enough money to afford a new one.

Looking for any help :worship: you can give to help me keep my camping dreams alive! Thanks.

Not having a lot of money is a good reason to build one.

If you can use a jig saw and a drill motor... you're almost there.

You can build a bare bones teardrop for maybe $1000, but people have built them for a lot less. Alan Geddes comes to mind.

And more importantly, building your own will give you tremendous pride in your accomplishment.

Food for thought!

Mike...

P.S. BTW, welcome to the forum! :D
The quality is remembered long after the price is forgotten, so build your teardrop with the best materials...

I would keep an eye on Craigslist as well. I just did a quick search of the seven western counties and went as far as Syracuse and Erie, PA. There's nothing listed right now.... but you never know when something might pop up. Unless it's you, you have competition in Lancaster also looking for a teardrop.

Have you considered building your own? There's a Harbor Freight on Union in Cheektowaga and another on Niagara Falls Blvd in Buffalo (although I can't place that one in my mind). It's a good place to get a base trailer frame. Check the Generic Benroy plans at the top of the page. It's really not that hard to build one. Tracking down the parts is the hardest thing. And like Mike all ready stated.... how fancy or simple you make it determines the final build cost. I figure mine should come in right around $850. Although mine is on the small side, because of that I have a lot of wasted lumber. I could have gone bigger and it really wouldn't have cost me anymore.

Just an ex-WNYer tossing in his two cents.

And, if you and hubby pitch in on the building, he might be more eager to camp in something he could show off as his handiwork!
