Designing a Puffie Standie?

Postby mikeschn » Thu Jul 03, 2008 3:42 pm

I'm thinking about modeling up a standie in CAD. I might turn it into blueprints, or I might turn it into plans, like the Generic Benroy plans.

But I need your thoughts.

At first blush, I'm thinking about the Puffin. With the bed and the porta potty, it could fit the bill for a lot of people who don't want to trek to the outhouse at night.

I'm thinking it could be built on a H.F. trailer, out over the wheels.

So here's the question. What floor plan would you guys like to see?

If memory serves me correctly the Puffin had a bed that was only 48" wide and 72" long. I'd like to see a larger mattress than that.

The Puffin had a bathroom/shower that was 30x36". That seems okay.

So point me in the right direction, something that would appeal to the most people here. ;)

Hey Mike;
Make sure to include some kind of dinette table and seating...could be just for two people. Being able to sit indoors on colder or rainy days is important.
The bathroom/shower doesn't interest me as much. When I was a kid our Pathfinder trailer didn't have such amenities so I guess I got used to making the walk to the outhouse. The plus side is that there is nothing to dump at the end of the weekend!
Also...I got my Linux installation talking on the internet using the Razr phone!!! WooHoo!!

Mike, I'm wanting a 10 foot long standy like the tinstream. might have to make it 12 foot long to include all the stuff, like a bed and sitting area, but I also want the Galley to still be outside under a hatch, or maybe a passthrough so I can snag some coffee without going outside. 8)

I think the big question is whether to go for a transverse or longitudinal bed/dinette. If you don't mind the drag, a transverse bed gets you much more space inside. But with a 75-76" bed, you get a 78" wide trailer which, with standy height, is a lot to tow.

Conversely if you put the bed/dinette lengthways, you need at least 66" width to get two people facing each other across a table - this means you get a triple bed when the dinette is a bed. It only takes 10" off the width, but that drops it into the shadow of the tow vehicle, except for the bit that sticks up the top.

It really depends if this is a long-distance standy or a local standy!

Andrew,

I do like the 66" width. That is what the Escape Hatch is, and it's a breeze to tow, no extra mirrors required.

The problem is, if the bed is 7' long, and the aisle is 2' and the bathroom is 30", that makes the trailer 11 1/2' long. How long is the HF trailer?

Jim,

I wasn't planning a galley. I figured one could store the stove and stuff in the tow vehicle, or in the counter (where Steve had the Air Conditioner), and just drag it out to a picnic table to cook.

Mr. Buzz,

Congrats. Were you able to use the pppd script to call the cdma?

I kinda like crackers idea in the squidget of a 4 slab bed that folds back on itself to form a full width seat. Gives alot of practical room when folded back. Wouldn't even need a dinette if you used a couple of tv tables. Less than 1000 lbs would be nice too! That would be a challenge...

Mike,
What if you make the bed fold up like a futon and build the table to go in front of it when its folded up... and attaches like the puffin outside when bed is down. If length is the issue, you could have the bed fold at 60/40 like a highback booth. A half dinette should suffice for 2 people.

I really liked the "Webegone". It worked very well and wasn't too high. I am already towing a bill board soooooooo.

You could do the one seat and make side tables that swing up and over for use or to get out without a lot of trouble. The Puffin looked tippy to me as mine does. I would like to see at least 5 wide on the trailer and build over if needed.

I think you need to go 5x10 on the trailer(allows overhang on both front/back and sides), with a minimum 60x76 bed set length wise...shower is not needed but a place for a porta potti is...a dinette for 2 (minimum)...some storage with a counter top will allow for some food or coffee prep inside...While the Puffin profile is cool and relatively easy to build, it is hard to beat the look of the Widget...a taller L'il Dinner would work as well......

I built this a few years ago.

I needed a shower XXX correction..I was told I needed a shower, with a place , with a door for a Porta Potti.

The only improvement on this I could see, and its not my idea, I saw it in a 1969 Fleetwing Trailer is to run the bed side ways, instead of front to back so as to lop off 18" off of the total length of the trailer still having a 60" wide bed. This side ways bed could become a "U" shaped dinette also.

Making the frame base 120" long

Happy Trails

Len,

Has it been that long ago already. Geesh, how time flies!!!

You know, the Generic ET has the bed turned so that it goes across the trailer. That makes the trailer 78" wide.

Image

MJ,

I was hoping to use a HF trailer. (The 5x10 red trailer is welded and doesn't allow for any changes.) Maybe if we start with the HF 5x8?

Image

But now we are already at $600+ without any discounts.

It sure would be nice to package something on the 4x8 HF trailer... I'm not looking for much, just a bed and a portapotty. :?

Maybe something like this for a floorplan?

OK, keeping the bed lengthwise will allow the usage of the 4x8 HF trailer with 6"s over the tires(not my favored way of doing it...BUT...) and still have a queen bed and stretched to fit the rest of the requirements.......

Yep, its over 2 years old. (3ed season)

Hey 76-78" was all the wider the Scotty's and old Shasta's were (and a lotta others as well).

I have "Cot Size " Mattresses in my new Tear. 32X72". I'm 5'8", my feet have never touched the lower 8-10" of those mattresses. 78" wide is fine.

Happy Trails

Mike...I was wondering what you were thinking in terms of height. Something like a Lo-Liner or doing a drop well like a Sportsman? It would be nice to have one that fit through a typical garage door. For me, at 6'2" the big thing is for sure bed length, but was thinking just how short a standie could be. I guess it would just be a matter of getting used to it. I had a house in Denver that only had 6' doors into the closet and bathroom. Back in 1917, when it was built, people were shorter! Does anyone know how high a Lo-Liner was? Doug
