altering earth's rotation speed

Postby Roly Nelson » Mon Jul 14, 2008 7:40 pm

Just got to thinking, what if every vehicle in the world would face east at the exact time and do a major burnout. Would the pressure placed on the face of the earth with all of those millions of spinning tires, alter it's speed as it spun on it's axis? Come on math majors, figure it out for me.

Simple answer, No.

Earths rotational speed is constant, determined by it's mass as effected by a solar rotation constant provided by our sun, SOL. The solar rotation constant is a direct reflection of the Suns mass, speed of rotation and the gravitational pull from Uranus... :)
Keep thinking outside the box and all manner of ideas will become reality......

while I think it would take more than a LOT of cars doing burn out to change things...my understand that the earths rotational speed is slowing down at the moment.

I think Roly's idea would work if we could also get everyone who isn't in a vehicle to jump up into the air at that same exact moment thereby removing the sum total weight of 4 billion people from the mass of the earth.

Of course, the added velocity of the earth would probably be cancelled out as soon as all those vehicles hit their brakes . . . not to mention the effect of the implosion of the surface of North America as soon as all us fat americans hit the ground after our jump.

All pure speculation and conjecture, of course, especially if you know like I do that the earth is flat and doesn't rotate at all. :R

I personally think we shouldn't mess with Mama Earth.
