Montreal: what to see & what to do

The wife has to go to Montreal for work. I may go up there to sightsee and be a tourist for a couple days while she is working.

Anything cool that I shouldn't miss?

BTW: no French for me.

There are tonnes (metric funny huh!) of websites on the city. I've only driven through the city, stayed on the major routes. Old downtown is supposed to be quite the experience, as close to europe as you can get in north america. There is a veiwpoint up on the mountain that is supposed to be fantastic. The drivers in the city are some of the most aggressive in the world so take care not to get in the way. If you have never driven in Quebec you should take a look for their traffic rule oddities, You cant turn right on a red light. There are some more but you are going to have to look them up yourself.
Have fun.

It's been close to 20 years since I was in Montreal - I figured one of the eastern Canadians might have offered some info. Montreal is a city I would love to visit again with more time.

There are several festivals, 'Just For Laughs' comedy fest, the 'Jazz Festival', 'International Music Festival' - timing of the events I am unsure of.

Mont-Royal is the viewpoint referred to by Wos.

Notre-Dame Basilica is one of many fantastic old cathedrals.

Old Montreal is full of historic buildings and a few days worth of sight seeing itself.

The Botanical gardens, were awesome, the port along the St Laurent is worth seeing - although it's changed quite a bit since I was there.

Have a look here for more. http://www.infomontreal.com/attraction_en.asp

There is an event calendar here: http://www.vieux.montreal.qc.ca/calend/eng/req_cala.htm
