I can think of a few more important things going on in the world than legally requiring Americans to use a little less electricity by switching to CFLs, which use approximately 1/5 the energy of a comparable incandescent.

It is not that the CFL's are a scourge! (I use them in certian applications because of the cost saving benifit) It the fact the government has taken a freedom away! Keeping the Government out of our life is a constant battle and one of the more important things going on in the world.

I'm standing with Claw on this one. It is not the federal government's responsibility to "legally" require Americans to use less of anything. And unless someone can come forward and show me where in the Constitution they have authority to do that I'm not changing my opinion.

That said, all of our outside area lighting is done with higher wattage CFLs with high Kelvin numbers. Blue/white lighting is great for actually seeing what you're doing outside. Kind of like the brightest moon light you'll ever experience. We've been using them for years, by out own choice. And that's the way such things are supposed to happen in this country.

I agree with Claw and M B Hamilton.
Why are we all over the world fighting for other people to have freedoms when we keep getting ours taken away?
People are dieing for our freedom and our freedom is vanishing.

The really silly part is that the mercury produced by the coal fired plant in order to get the extra electricity that an incandescent uses is greater than the mercury used in the CFL anyway.

I'm sorry, I don't usually get into these political discussions, but are you actually equating Freedom of speech, religion, assembly, and representation, with choosing an inefficient light bulb?

Interesting comment. But I think your use of the word "equating" sets up a false premise here. If I rank my liberties there clearly will be some that are more important to me than others. The very action of ranking them ensure that. And it's quite unlikely that everyone tasked with ranking their liberties will come up with the same order that I do (you and I will probably agree that there is no universal order of importance to them, it's a personal thing).

But that doesn't change the reality that they are all my liberties. And liberties are not given to us by the government, they are ours by right.

I'm kinda liking what Mark said. Becides, so the government tells us what sorces we can get our light from. What is next? When we can get it? Because, you know, it would save alot of electricty if the government just shuts off all lights in all states between the hours of 12:00 - 14:00. Would do the environment alot of good. Do you see me running to go sign up for that?
What is the differnece, they are both saving energy?
Other countries run that way, so it can't be that bad, right? Lets try it here.

Just take a moment to consider who elected these guys...Just part of the Orwellian' trend to make all citizens into criminals for the smallest infractions that must be constantly monitored...
