Newbie Lurker TD wannabe from Western NY

Postby bobbruso » Mon Jul 21, 2008 3:57 pm

Hi I have enjoyed looking at the wealth of Teardrop info on the web, and would like to build my own soon. I plan to attempt a very lightweight model that will fit on a HF 4x8 trailer (already got one).

I really like the looks of the 'Cub Modernistic', but who knows, first attempts might stay simpler.

Anyway, I live in SouthWestern New York, and I just got back from yet another tent camping expedition(in the Adirondacks), and my somewhat older body can't take this as well as I once could.

Looking forward to 'seeing' you all here.

From an "ex" WNYer..... welcome to the club. Lots of good info here. If you have a question, just ask..... you will definitely get an answer.

Like yourself, this chronologically enabled body no longer likes sleeping on the ground.

"Fast and Cheap". "Slow and Expensive", or somewhere in between.... go for it. I don't think you will be sorry!!

Welcome to the site Bob.
Fast and cheap is relative. I have seen some people work on this site build one in a week or two, but they worked on it full time. If you already have your trailer, you can probably build for under $1000, depending on the materials you use. The expense comes in buying the fridge, microwave, stereo, coffee pot, ect. That is why building is so great. When it is through, it is your trailer. Best of luck, and don't hesitate to ask lots of questions.

Great replies

Thanks, all, for the words of encouragement.

As I mentioned earlier, I have the HF trailer (4x8 folder w/12" wheels) in 2 boxes in my garage. I bought it about 3-4 years ago, and now I amtrying to get it registered with NYS DMV. (they want a "hand-signed" bill of sale!).

I have read through the comments others have about the trailer (folding vs fixed, larger wheels, lengthening, moving the axle back) and feel better equipped (and a little more confused) to take it on.

I want to build a very lightweight model that can be easily towed by a 4 cylinder (1.9l) Saturn with 5 speed. The conflicting interest is that I am 6'4+" tall and need as big(long) a bed surface as I can get out of this thing. I am thinking of building the floor frame longer than 8' by a few inches and hang it off the rear of the trailer frame.

Anyway as I go I will post Q's and progress info.

I'm 6'4" also and I built mine on a 5x8 frame and didn't extend it. I fit a 80" long queen size mattress in and still had room for the galley.
