Aluminium Door Trim

Postby shamrock » Sat Jul 26, 2008 7:36 am

Some time ago I got to see a Camp-inn up close and I was impressed, very good workmanship. What I was looking at the most was the all the moldings they use,(some what like a small H with the 2 side radiused out) and now that I am to the point on my TD for trim I cant seem to find that trim they use on there doors, Dont get me wrong I can find trim at my local rv store but my doors are only 3/4 inch thick and they only have wider widths and not like Camp-inns.

You aren't able to find it because we designed it ourselves and have it custom extruded for us. We do sell door trim kits with our door shape or, for an added fee, if you have a custom door shape, we can make a trim kit for you. This will only work for doors that are 3/4", which yours are. To get you a trim kit, we would need a traced profile of your door...call or email us for details. Or, as you are in Milwaukee, come on up to the shop and bring the profile (or the door) with you.

Sham, we faced that same situation and searched and searched for a "Z" profile for the door jamb, never finding it, we finally used 2 piece of 1"x1/16th AL angle, we ripped one leg down to 1/4" on both pieces and laid then over each other to get the "Z" shape....the door edge molding was much easier, we used 3/4"x1/16th AL channel and ripped both legs down to 1/4"...we then annealed the AL as needed to get the bendability we needed and were done...on the second tear we got Lucky and KeithB came across some lightweight "Z" profile at a junkyard and picked it up for us...

p.s....ripping AL on the table saw is a kinda advanced user technique...it can be very dangerous if done improperly....use at least 2 featherboards, long sleeves and a full face shield.........MJ

what about ripping it on a bandsaw?

I picked this one up off craigslist with the stand and extra blade for 65. as you can see by the mess it has already cut 6 hatch spars.

...well loopers, if it makes it easier on ya, then COOL,,,a band saw certainly won't throw all them little AL shards atcha like a table saw will.....

p.s. of course, that means, when cutting channel, you will be cutting both legs at once........MJ

We get lots of calls and visits from curious people and homebuilders with questions or looking for parts.

We do love visitors! Doesn't matter whether they are close by or just passing through. Last week, Rich (Nitetimes) from Penn. stopped by on his way to the IRG & visited with the guys...always fun to meet people on the board!

So, if you are planning on being in the area, feel free to stop by...but you might want to call first to make sure someone is there...weekdays aren't usually a problem.
