Overwhelmed on electrical setup....

Postby KDOG » Sat Jul 26, 2008 3:43 pm

ALOT of information here, so much my head is spinning so I'm going to be the annoying newb and ask if there is such thing or if someone could show/describe a basic electrical w/battery setup and installation? I know its a big request and I'm going to keep rooting through the forum here to find out everything I can. I haven't even started my build yet but I definetly want to ask the dumb questions now instead of when I'm in the middle of my build! I am definetly going to be using an a/c and probably a little fridge.

How about this:

You could just use an extension cord for the ac and fridge.

KDog try this thread and look at the stickies at the top of the page. Can you be more specific about your concerns?

This has pictures so it is fairly easy to follow.

Please make note to self KDOG -

1. KEEP 120 V and 12 V circuts seperate and protected
2. GFI is a good thing
3 appropiate sized breakers for the application
4. #2 & #3 could probablly be found together in a good quality extension cord power strip combo ;)

I guess that may be what I'm looking for - an extension cord power strip combo on steroids...

Extension Cord vs. A/C Inlet and 30A Cable

Postby wlooper89 » Sat Aug 02, 2008 3:40 am

The extension cord and power strip will certainly have you up and running soonest. You may want to add up the amp draw of the appliances you plan to use to see if an extension cord will handle it. The heavy duty ones are rated 20A. Most appliances show how many watts are used. The relationship is Amps=Watts/Volts. For example a 1000W microwave oven draws about 8 amps.

Some people install a shore power inlet somewhere on the trailer. These can be for a 20A extension cord or 30A, which uses a heavier cable and different type of plug. Most of the places I camp have 30A service and also 20A outlets. My 30A shore power cable connects to an inlet on my electrical compartment box on the trailer tongue. This can involve running A/C wires to outlets in the trailer, which may take a good bit of time to install.

The choice is yours. A possibility is to use an extension cord and power strip for now and add the A/C wiring later if you want.
