Need help on shasta trailer purchase

Postby tonyj » Sat Jul 26, 2008 2:27 pm

My sister is looking at buying an old Shasta trailer off Craigslist in Texas.

The owner states he has no title, but previously had no problem with registration.

My question, if anyone (especially in Texas) can answer, since this was a manufactured travel trailer, shouldn't there be a title to this trailer, or does it just require registration?

If anyone from Texas has a Shasta and knows the answer, I would appreciate the help. I would hate for her to buy the thing, then get into some type of nightmare situation over ownership, or registration. They want to look at the trailer tomorrow (Sunday), so can't ask the county clerk for the info until Monday.

Thanks.

I own an older model Prowler. I received a title when I bought it. I also had a boat, motor and trailer that each had a title. I do live in Texas and was told that none of these could be registered without the title. If it was born with a title, I would not buy it witout a title unless I planned to park it on private property. Somewhere there is a title and it has somebody elses
name on it. I would not want to be pulled over on the side of the road trying to tell the officer that it was not stollen. You also would not be able to get insurance( I would not think).
Be careful.
Good luck Keith

Thank you, Keith. Kind of what I figured.

Even when you register as a "Travel Trailer" the very first thing on the list is to make an appointment with the vehicle theft department. They come out and check to make sure that it isn't stolen or uses stolen parts.

Rocky,

Vehicle theft department? Never heard that one before. Thanks. I'll pass it on.

The VTR (Vehicle Title & Registration) not the tag office, office gave me the number. That's the only I knew how to get a hold of them.

It can be a sheriff, cop, trooper, constable, etc. but specific officers are members of the "Vehicle Theft Task Force". Any cop won't work (unless you slip it thru the cracks).

Thanks to each of you for your input. :applause: As a result of that and our own research into it, we decided to pass on the Shasta. Thanks, Tony, for putting the question out there.

Yep, the only trailers in Texas that do not need a title are utility trailers, and farm trailers under 4000 pound gross. However, due to the Texas definition of a travel trailer (permanently installed plumbing and living quarters), most teardrops can be utilty trailers. Just went thru the search on that one.

glad yall found the info... I didnt read this until today....but I was gonna say that if it is a factory made camping trailer, my dad always had titles with them...... just like the cars on his lot.... but not on privately build ones.
