Hello from a newbie in MS

Postby KevinS » Mon Jul 28, 2008 4:47 pm

I've been lurking for the past couple of weeks and discovered I know and have camped with one of your fellow members from AL, SuperTroll.

I'm looking for options for a little bitty trailer I might can pull behind my 2005 Toyota Corolla 4 banger.
Towing rated at 1500 # max with 150 # max tongue (but I would like much less)

I used to be a backpacker (that's how I know ST) but had a stroke over a year ago and now have limited use of my right side, but I still love to camp. I have a large full size TT that I pulled to Gulf Shores a lot but I want little and better gas mileage now.

I'm comfortable in little bitty backpacking tents so I figure a little bitty one person trailer (with A/C) would work!

Trikermans Teardrop (in the Hall of Fame) looks like it would work, maybe?

Cheers,
Kevin

Welcome! You shouldn't have any trouble keeping it well below 1000 lbs. My 5x8 Generic Benroy weighs 960# empty.

Oh Goodie!! Another Mississipian!!! Now there are two of us!!
Let me welcome you to the forum y'all. Kick back, relax, have a glass of tea and enjoy.

I too wanted an itty bitty TD, and I'm well into it now. It's actually starting to look like I may finish it some day.

Look at the pictures, ask questions and I'm sure you will come up with something that works for you.

Image to the playground Kevin S. Light weight is not always small---or too small that is. It is quite possible to go 4'x8' and stay well below your needs. Just remember it is most vital that you take lots of :pictures: :pictures: :pictures: to keep the bubble oil level. Do some of this :hammer: lots of this  and this :designing: but none of this :hammerhead:

Enjoy

I'll be towing with a corolla too. I wish mine was an XRS for the extra horses and larger brakes. There have been many post about light weight building on the forum and a few on going ones. You should be able to stay under 1000lbs. without too much trouble.

The hall of fame and other forum tear builders personal albums should give you a lot of food for thought. Don't forget to check out the stickies too.

Welcome to the forum Kevin,

I'm sure you'll find lots of ideas here to keep things small and lightweight.

My 4x8 Generic Benroy was 840 pounds, but my Escape Hatch/Winter Warrior was only 800 pounds. :o

Hi Kevin.... welcome to this wonderful forum , the best there is for camping in small spaces!

Best advice , if you can do it, is to see one in person... pick up the hatch, pick up the tongue, lay down inside... get a real feel for it.

Come camping with us in Louisiana in the fall... you'll get hooked!!!

I tow with a 4cyl Honda Accord and when I first got on this forum I looked at the build journal of Bev's Cubby found HERE and I liked how she broke down the weights of everything.

I have pulled my 5x8 to over 12 campouts as far as 8 hours away and never had a problem. I don't take the A/C on every trip.

Good luck !
Happy camping!

Julie

Thank all y'all so much for the warm welcome.

Wilkommen Herr Kevin....These folks know a lot...and I'm quietly absorbing it ALL....one day, BAM! I Take over and RULE the land of Tiny Tears.....

A reminder for you all, Kevin has limited mobility/use of his right side...anyone got a Tear they might sell outright to help him out?

(Kev: occasionally check the for sale links at the bottom of the index....)

NOTE TO ALL: Don't hold knowing me against Kevin...he doesn't know I'm a pariah around here...LOL
Keep thinking outside the box and all manner of ideas will become reality......

I'm getting better each month, ST. I still walk with a bit of a limp, but my right hand works pretty dang good now, it's just that the arm is a little weak. :)

Here's one in New Orleans (check for water damage before buying).

I might can use this newish boat trailer if I decide to build.
It's about 39" wide between the removable fenders, with 1 & 3/8" clearance between the tires and 2" angle iron.

Click on the "Album" button below to take a look.

I'll bet you could get really creative with something based on that trailer and built for 1. Costs seem to go down rapidly if you can keep your design at or under the 4 x 8 profile!

That's exactly what I was looking for before I bought my HF mini trailer; but I couldn't find one at the time. Looking at the pics, it appears that it would be fairly simple to move the frame along the full length tongue tube to get the axle placement in the optimal spot for a variety of designs and to add extensions to the frame to support the floor and cabin.. I got lucky with the HF and my design..... the axle fell right where I needed it without having to move it.
