Tear Drop trailers average tongue weight?

Postby SuperTroll » Tue Jul 08, 2008 8:42 pm

Now I know there are huge variations due to size, shape, construction, axle placement, yada yada ad nauseum , but can you define a range that the majority of Teardrops would likely fall within?

just curious.....
Keep thinking outside the box and all manner of ideas will become reality......

I would say 75 to 150 pounds considering the majority of tears are in the 750-1500 pound range and you are shooting for 10% of the weight on the ball.

I think 15% of the gross trailer weight would be the minimum tonque weight I would have especially with light tow vehicles. My 2 cents.

That means my Corolla with it's max. tonque weight of 75# can only tow a 500# teardrop.

American standards for tongue weights favor 10% of total...over in Yurp, they go lighter(but then they are Yurpeens)

Mine is 13% at the moment but doesn't have the battery in the back or tongue box yet, I'd expect it to finish around the same mark though.

Cheers

Kevin I use to have a 7500 lb. boat on a twin axle trailer that only had a tongue weight of 115 lbs would you like to pull that with your Corolla? In my experience most creatures in nature do not have tails exceeding their body weight  and live for long. Tongue weight is not an absolute but a variable to consider when designing or towing trailers. As for my boat and trailer, it would overwhelm my 6500 lb Suburban when things got dicey and although the manual said 10,000 lb towing capacity my gut said this ain't fun no mo! I think my 2 cents are up. :applause:
