Need Delivery Assistance

Postby OurStuff4You » Sun Jul 18, 2004 8:35 pm

Hi,

We have sold our Benroy to someone in California. We're getting high quotes for them to get it shipped from our home in Michigan to their location. We thought we had someone that would deliver it on their flatbed trailer for $800, but his Mom just went into the hospital so we're back to the drawing board.

Has anyone had a trailer shipped and if so, how much did it cost and who did you use? We're getting quotes for over $1200 which seems like a lot to transport a TEARDROP!

Any help, suggestions, volunteers, etc. would be appreciated.

Also, if anyone knows of another vintage teardrop being sold in decent condition in the midwest I'd appreciate the heads up.

I'd be curious to get a quote. I really want to get this transaction done so the trailer can get in the new owner's hands. We can get the trailer to Illinois if it can then get to California for an economical price.

That seems really high for just a trailer. Friends have gotten cars shipped from coast to coast for that.

I posted a message on the Vintage Vacations forum asking for information. I'll let you know if I hear anything.

That's what I thought too Nick. We shipped a Packard from California to Michigan for that price. The tear is definitely MUCH smaller and lighter! If I had a few weeks I'd deliver it myself for the privledge of meeting Ben myself. Then I could drag one of those many California trailers back that I keep seeing. However, since I don't have 2 weeks to do this.... (sighs)

Well that sure doesn't help us then. What would he have charged? Any other suggestions folks? I really need to get this to California!

Rhonda,

I've asked on a couple other forums and have gotten the same kind of prices you have.

Some have suggested contacting a moving company to see if they have room with someone's household goods they are moving. They put stuff in big crates. I don't know if they're big enough for the trailer or not. Another suggestion is to contact a long haul trucking company or broker to find room on a truck heading this way.

I don't know what it would cost to rent a Uhaul to go from Michigan to L.A. one way and then fly back. If I had the time, I'd do it for you as I'm flying to Ohio next month for the Mopar Nationals.

We considered taking it out ourselves on our trailer (a trailer on a trailer - gotta love it!) but after figuring the cost of gas and lodging (I wouldn't feel right sleeping in someone else's trailer) it'd be over $1k plus time time ... over a week to get there and back probably. I guess I'll keep looking. I really want to get this into their hands.

Hey, why don't you put an ad in the paper offering it as a one way rental to CA? Maybe you can get someone to pay you to deliver it for you!

That would be totally possible, a dude I worked with said that the moving company stuck his daughter's Fiero in the truck along with their household items. It's worth a shot.

Rhonda,,sometime back there was a delivery situation similar to yours,,the seller did a bit of leg wark and found a string of folks along the route and set up a relay,,seems like the trailer went from texas area to oregon (may not be right),,last I heard it got there,,a bunch of teardroppers all "pulled" literally,,the thing for next to nothing,,look at the locator and drag out a map,,it might work,,,

Thanks all. We just returned from a 2 week vacation (from Michigan to Louisville, KY to SW Michigan, to Hastings Minnesota and back). I'm doing more checking. Nick sent me a few suggestions that we've passed along to the buyer. We considered taking it out there ourselves but with the current price of gas our cost alone would be what the bigger carriers are quoting. I'll keep you posted!

Rhonda,

As usual, you only come across sites of interest when you're looking for something else... You might want to see if this web site is any use:
http://www.expresstransporters.com
They appear to advertise loads available to shippers - they're mostly bigger than a teardrop, but it might be an opportunity.
