So I'm doing it.... :D I have been looking for a pop up and said nevermind. I'm building a teardrop. This forum page i found will be great. Alot of great ideas to help me along. I'll be sure to take pleanty of pictures to document the build. I found a trailer 5x10 on Craigslist for 100 that i think will be great to start with.

Cheers

Welcome to the forum, Norm. Now that you have the trailer frame, all you need now is a couple of sides, a roof, and a hatchlid, and you've built a teardrop. Then all you have to do is finish it. Good luck on your build.

Hope your build goes well. Sounds like you have done a lot of research already. As you have seen there are many ideas and and lots of motivation to be found on the forum. Answers to the many questions that come up are only a few clicks away.

Welcome to the forum Norm,

Sounds like you've figured out what we like...

So tell us, what are you going to build?

I have been looking at so many ideas the past couple days i'm loosing track of what ones ive seen and liked. But one sticks in my head and its the Desert Dawg by Joanne. Looks great and probably something I can handle. The only thing is I'm going to try the sheet metal. I was a Sheetmetal guy on Navy aircraft for a few years now lets see if I learned anything. LOL

Yeah I was thinking just the top in sheetmetal. To reflect some of this florida sun. Sides would be wood sheeting. I am trying to decide if i want to run both 110 and 12v systems in case i decide to run a/c. Any ideas would be great.

I will probably never camp where electricity is not available but chose to wire 120 ac and 12 volt dc. I could see a time pulled over to the side of the road looking for something and thinking 12 volt lighting would have been nice so I just did it. It is as simple as a 4 watt 12 volt landscape bulb shoved in a clearance light socket or an 1157 socket and bulb cost is just pennies. all my fixtures are dual wired. Just helped Jeff ( nitriousjunkie) wire his this week ( see midwest posts)

Hi TIZ and welcome

I took Joanne's Desert Dawg as inspiration for my build too, best of luck with yours.

Thanks Bob I'll keep it in mind. It sounds like a good way to go. I'm thinking all 12v for my interior lighting and radio, But in the galley have 110ac plugs along with 12dc for the lighting. I found some 12v led strip lighting that I thing will look great tucked up under the cabinets out of sight. The only reason I will run 110 ac is for an air conditioner and the blender. Who knows i might have a toaster oven.

Welcome!

I would probably own a popup now if I hadn't owned a Honda CRV when I started looking. With a 1500# towing capacity, I could find nothing that I could tow. Started looking for a small trailer, found and bought a used teardrop that turned out to be a rotten piece of junk held together by the outer skin. In the meantime found this site. Tore the old down to the chassis and started over. I KNOW how this one is being built, and although I find myself having to discover a new skill almost every step of the way, I am loving it!

btw, Joanne and her Desert Dawg was and is a major inspiration to me, as well as Mike's Weekender detailed in this forum.
God Bless

Cliff

Here it is...

Now I removed the planks to find rust. But I'm sure I can work with it.

Looks like this was an old "Pop-Up"
