It's me again. Door handle question!!!

It's me again. Door handle question!!!

Postby Dragonryder » Thu Aug 07, 2008 1:52 pm

I am getting down to where I need to add some things that I have been putting off. I built my camper with 2 X 2's and now that I'm ready to add items like the door handles, I'm having trouble finding any that will work with my teardrop. I would like the ones like those normally found on most campers. The thickest wall I've found them made for is 1 1/2". With the outer wall, the 2 X 2's and the paneling on the inner wall the thickness is 2" even. Does anyone know where I can find a handle to fit a 2"thick door? I've had the same problem with the vent on top and a few other things. I've just decided to use the vent off my old pop-up and make the molding so it looks better.

Thanks for any help.

Have a good one and hope the weather is perfect where ever you are!!!

dragonryder,

You might try Grant at LilBear Teardrops www.teardrops.net
I used his handles for entry doors and the T handle for my hatch both had activation rod, (about 1/4" sq bar) long enough that if your doors we're 3" thick you probably could still make them work, only drawback was that the entry locks and the hatch lock could not be keyed alike.

Oh, by the way, have you been back to Pern recently? 8)

I've got Grant's door handles too and they could easily be used on a 2" door! I still haven't cut the extra off on mine.

I just read a Pern novel on my last camping trip this past weekend!

I agree. I got handles from Grant and used them on my 1-3/4" doors and had to cut at least 1/2" off the rod between the outside handle and the inside latch.

I used handles from Home Depot, and while they are not exactly camper handles, I think they look pretty good!

I don't know, if this is availeble in the US of A, but these doorhandles are usual in Europe. I just made today one in my door

I've never seen those, but I like it. Wonder what the shipping would be to south AR?

I'd also recommend Grant's door latches. I used paddle latches in mine (door is 1 3/4"), and I'm not sure all the extra work to have internal latches was worth it. In retrospect, simply bolting the latch onto the back of the door would have saved a lot of time and effort that could have been better spent elsewhere.

I got the same ones at Lowes (but in brass and surface mount.... no pics as of yet) for the door. Not sure what I'm going to do for the hatch yet!! I have about 8 weeks to get it ready for LCGIII; which may end up being it's maiden voyage!!! Might just have to use the ratcheting tie downs on the hatch until I come up with a permanent solution. Is there such a thing as permanent in TD world????

Wow!!! I didn't know there were so many choices. I guess I haven't done my homework as well as I thought. I guess what I've heard is true, when you're building your own, you're only limited by your imagination!!!

Thanks all for this info. I will check out the Grants. I'm also heading to Lowe's tonight so I will check them out as well. I'll let you know and hopefully be able to post pictures soon.

I just wanted to take a moment to let you know that this is a great site. I have gotten so many ideas and already several answers to questions that I just didn't know where to turn to. Thanks a bunch!!! :applause:

Speaking of latches, has anyone used one like this? I like the flush look.

I used that style of lock. It's often referred to as a "Trimark style" lock. It looks and works great. It has an integrated deadbolt, which I like. As I mentioned, it's a lot more work than the surface mounted version (Grant's), as you have to do a lot of measuring/cutting/drilling/mortising to get everything to fit right. Also, they have a pretty limited door thickness range (1 1/4" to 1 1/2"). I got mine in chrome through these folks (item 31-3611):

I forgot to ask to get them keyed alike, but I contacted the manufacturer, and they swapped the lock core out for me for free so they would match.

That's the one I've been seeing that will fit the 1 1/2" doors. I like the looks but it just won't fit. I just looked at the Grants and they will work perfect. They have the latch I wanted for the sides on the hatch. Thanks for the heads up. I will probably get my hatch hinge from them as well:thumbsup: :applause:

I really like the style but the biggest I've been able to find is for a 1 1/2" door. No biggie, I like the "slam shut" handles as well. It looks a little easier to install. That's what I'm looking for on my first build.

I've learned so much from this build. If and when I build another one, I think it will go smoother. A big chunk of my budget for this build was spent on tools. I didn't have many wood working tools. Most of mine were for working on cars. Now that I have more woodworking tools I may want to build one more. Oh well, I guess I better finish the first one before I commit to a second one. ;)
