You should use a LM317T. it is available for $2.29 from radioshack. Link to product:

Then calculate what value of resistors you need. Here is a calculator:

If you are looking for 9 volts 50 ohms for resistor1 and 310 ohms for resistor2 should work. Then wire it up according to the diagram on the page.

I did the same thing with radio shack's LM317T voltage regulator. It works great!

resistor value

What resistor values did you use? There are a couple of combinations that will get you the correct voltage.

I went by the schematic on the package and used a micro potentiometer to adjust the voltage with a small screw driver and volt meter. Mine is vairable 0 to 12 volts.

use 50 and 300 ohms and it will be about right.
