How To Hack a Battery

Postby PresTx82 » Thu Aug 07, 2008 10:00 pm

I don't know if this little trick has every been submitted on this forum, but check these two links out. It may come in handy if you ever need some small batteries in a pinch.

Might come in handy someday, but who carries 9V batteries anymore? The only thing that I can think of that I own that uses them are my multi-meters.

I don't need many of the watch batteries, but that's an interesting source.

Smoke detectors are remaining users of 9V batteries around my house.

The bigger question for me is... where are "quadrule A" (AAAA) batteries needed? The smallest batteries of this shape in anything I own are triple-A (AAA).

Also, when I took apart a 9V battery many years ago, I recall it having 6 almost rectangular cells in a single stack, not a "six pack" of cylindrical batteries... they may not all be the same.

Now I have to find a old dead 9V waiting for disposal and tear it apart, just out of curiosity.

Saw one of these video clips a while back except it said that a lantern battery contained AA batteries. It is FALSE, don't try it, I'm sure the same goes for the 9V and A23 batteries also.

I looked at a 9V versus AAA batteries yesterday, and it appears that if a 9V is built of six cylindrical cells (as shown in the video, and described as quadruple-A size), then the AAAA cells would be smaller in diameter than a AAA, but about the same length.

Perhaps the idea is to use the "AAAA" cells obtained this way in place of AAA, but the capacity would be so much lower that I can't see it being worthwhile except as an emergency fix if some AAA were needed and only a 9V were available.

It would be nonsensical for a 6V lantern battery to contain AA cells; logically, if built up from a common size it would be four D cells, but taller cells of about the same diameter as a D (as shown in the link from the Snopes page) make much more sense. There are adapters available which hold four D cells and fit in where a 6V lantern battery is needed.

Good Snopes link, asianflava.

I have a couple of little "pen light" flashlights that use the AAAA bateries. They are kinda hard to find though. I do like the flashlights as they are the same size as an ink pen.
