Side Logo Installed

Postby Creamcracker » Mon Aug 11, 2008 6:13 pm

I took the advice of the majority....and the wife! I think you guys were right the logo does look better this way round. I'm probably going to have to buy new fenders. These ones made of HDPE (I believe) just will not hold the paint... I bought the only paint I could find for plastic. Anyway I'm going to buy the ones that are already white in color. This Fulton/Wesbar make comes in black, white or silver (which I sprayed red) Philip

Yeah, they were the ones that you were making --- and I may well get a set...but for the moment the ones in white the same as I have on will cost me $30 for the pair. For the moment I'll have to go with the cheaper ones.

Yes, Kerry, I used the Krylon. I even took them to a body shop and they didn't think they could paint them.

I guess that I will try to remember to never buy those - at least if I want to change the color. I have used the Krylon paint for plastics on lots of different things and never had a problem.

Must be some strange stuff!!

I have the same concern right now...... a tight budget!!! Those round ones sure look a lot better than the stock HF'S, until I can afford to get a pair of 12"ers from Grant. Could you possibly provide a link to where they may be found. White, black or silver would be acceptable by me for the time being.

The ones I painted red I purchased on ebay...I am in contact with that seller and he will be listing more this week...he has about 50 pairs all of them are silver in color. The white and black ones I can order through a retailer in Virginia. The ones on ebay when I bought them were very cheap...can't remember exactly how much. When the ones go up on ebay I'll send the link.

I work in a paint/body shop...its not an issue painting plastics we can paint em any color you want ,its a matter of costs vs what can be reasonably charged ...for most body shops the profit on such a small job isn't worth the effort .
....the thing is ,...most people assume we either stockpile the most popular colors or can easily get them from a jobber some where.while thats somewhat true on the base colors ,there are literally thousands of different shades of every color imaginable .The shop I work at uses a computerised paint program that once a customer chooses a color we enter the color code and it brings up an exact formula ...we then mix that color formula by hand...as in any "recipe" there is a certain minimium amouint that can be made ...in our case thats usually 1 pint although depending on some colors/effects (pearls /metal flake/"diamond dust") as little as a few drops of a particular ingredient can make all the difference in a minimium amount of a quart or more.on average it takes 5-15 minutes just to mix your color, plus the costs/labor associated with prep... after its all added up we'd have to charge you at least $50 or more PER fender just to to cover our expenses .In our shop we have a $250 minimium on all jobs we do .Then again we warrantee our paints against fading/cracking up to 4 yrs ...try getting that with krylon... ;)

I know the body shop I visted quite well and cost wasn't/isn't a problem with them. However the fenders are made of HDPE and...after speaking with Krylon it appears that no one can recommend a paint that will adhere to the surface. I've talked with another auto restoration guy and he recommended I check out a product called "Paint Prep" which is used on the bare plastic. Anyone out there used that?

Philip[/quote]...I'm heading in today and I can check on that for you..(we get a lot of motorcycle fairings/moldings made of plastics)...I'm not sure of its composition or retail(walmart) availability but I'll find out.
