Newbie from DeLand, FL

Greetings, all...

I have had a passing interest in TD's for a couple of years, but now have a reason...I am planning a mega-trip for next summer. Florida to San Diego to Seattle to Maine to Florida...six or seven weeks...driving my 87 Porsche 924S. I will say that the 924S is a front engined, water-cooled "conventional-type" car, not the rear-engined 911. As such, it gets good gas mileage and has a 1500 pound tow capacity. I thought about towing my motorcycle along with me, but with such a long trip, I am thinking that I could build/buy a TD and tow my home with me, taking advantage of the state parks and other opportunities along the way. I will spend most of the trip alone (my wife will join me for the trip up the Pacific Coast Highway), and will visit friends and relatives along the way - and see this great country in a way I have dreamed of for decades...in a Porsche.

Anyway, I will probably start building this fall. I actually have a set of plans from DesertTearDrops of Phoenix - got them several years ago. Anyway, this looks like a good place to start.

I appreciate the help that you folks have already provided, and look forward to more exploration.

Welcome Kevin,

Ask lots of questions, read the sticky's before starting your build. There have been a lot of new ideas, new technologies and new materials since you got your plans.

Take lots of pictures and notes along the way, can be a life saver, on down the road when you don't want to hit a wire or a screw that is now hidden....etc.

Again welcome and enjoy the build

Hey Kevin,

Welcome to the forum. Yep, towing your home with you is a better idea than towing your motorcycle.

You'll find lots of ideas here.

Have fun!

Welcome to the forum Kevin. I had a similar trip planned for early next summer but a series or unplanned financial events have even made me suspend my tear build for a short while so I guess I'll be way behind schedule. The folks on this forum are the best and will give you a number of options to any problem or opportunity with your build. If questions come up or you just want feedback and ideas be sure to post and I'm sure you will be able to find solutions. Good luck with your build.
