Vinyl sheeting over 6mm birch ply for outer skin?

I drove by a truck the other day where a guy (contractor) was cutting these sheets of vinyl from a big roll for something (I didn't see what he was doing). So that got me thinking, could you glue outdoor vinyl to the outside of the roof skin? How would you prep the wood for that?

EPDM rubber (ethylene propylene diene M-class rubber) roofing material might be the product of choice. To prepare the substrate folks here often recommend CPES - Clear penetrating Epoxy Sealer.

Its stapled along the edges after being slightly strectched. I put some rubber/silicone/sealant down the edge also. The edge trim is screwed into place and further holds the vinyl down. I also put some sealant on top of the vinyl under the trim to help seal out the screw holes.

Vinyl by the roll 60" wide.

You mean there's nothing adhering the vinyl to the wood? Aren't you worried about moisture under there rotting the wood?

What moisture from where? It ain't going to be there! The aluminum sheets aren't adhered to the undersurface either -- they are "floated" on top.

The wood under my vinyl has been sealed and painted. The vinyl skin is stapled in place with weather proof tape on the ends, and seams. She's stored under a carport, and I don't plan to camp during a storm. Time will tell..

Where did you get the vinyl and what does it go for a foot? Just curious...

I got mine at Joanns Fabrics. They were having a 50% off sale for a store closing. I got 4 pieces of 54"x60" for $40. I think the reg price was $9 a sq. yard. ( this is for marine vinyl)

That looks nice. I guess I'm thinking of more of a vinyl/fiberglass sheeting for mine. I'm still looking for the exact material.

Have you treated your vinyl with anything to keep it from molding or sun fading or anything like that?

Just put it on afew weeks ago, I don't plan on keeping it in the elements for long periods, ( car cover for the sun, and I will store in under a carport during the rainy season) only time will tell.

It wont do that if you just wipe it down once in a while. Armoral is good or Son of a Gun. I've had the same vinyl tonneau cover on my MGB sice 1975 -- no mold, no fading!
