That awning is more like an add-a-room. It is awsome.I wonder how much they cost plus shipping.KF

Your campers are the cutest ever! I love the pac-man plan, that is unique.Great idea to connect the awning to the luggage rack. KF

Hank, any more info on this product?...I'm gradually talking my wife into making one. I'll put the plans together and she'll make it happen. I just think the design is great.

How in the world would you ever get the curtain rods to stay on the wall.

Is that important? Here you can see, there are manufactorers that makes awnings, THAT'S important! What you do with or without it, that's not the question.

Kristi, I LOVE your awnings, and I really would like to see you come up with a style that will work with our tears. One thing I can think of is that the mounting point on the hatch may need to be far enough up the hatch that when it is open with the awning attached, and it rains, water won't creep under the awning and drip off the bottom of the hatch (if that makes any sense).

Maybe if I show you a photo. If you look at my tear hatch, I am thinking that the attachment point for the awning would need to be above the curve, closer to the hinge. That way water won't seep under and off the end of the hatch if it rains. Here is the pic:

Looking forward to hearing if you come up with something that will work. BTW, welcome aboard Kristi.

Len,

I like your awning supports. Does this roll up on itself? Is it one long solid length when you store it for transport? How do the rails attach to the side of the camper?

.

I used an RV awning rail to hold it to the side of the trailer.

The outlookers are spring loaded, something I made out of a Home shower bar (I just made them longer) and the uprights are just old adjustable tent poles.

As you can see, its free standing and it doesn't roll up on its own. You have to roll it up and I store it either in the Truck bed or on the roof of the Truck, though it will fit inside the Trailer.

Thanks,

Happy Trails

Thanks Len! I did notice it was freestanding. I like it! I purchased an awning from someone similar to Kristi's offer here. It uses a one piece front bar support, no gromets to poke the side vertical poles, but used pvc elbows to attach the vertical elbows. With a little creativity solution for a breakdown/adjustable front bar, I think the poles could be broken down for transport. Of course we would need Kristi, or someone sewing the awning to allow for a larger front pocket.

One idea is to use an aluminum swimming pool adjustable pole that has a cam lock to adjust length. Or, use electrical conduit couplers. Another option to devise a coupler that has spring locks, similar to adjustable table legs on picnic tables ie, like Costco sells. I may gather some photo examples, and start a separate thread for discussions.

Awning

Postby Kristi Foster » Thu Sep 04, 2008 1:42 pm

I believe placing the awning rail on the body of the trailer just above where the hatch connects may be the best bet. That way rain will not run into the hatch and the hatch could be up or down. The awning would need to be extra long to cover the length of the hatch plus 7'. With grommets at the end of the awning for the poles, plus grommets about 4' out from the trailer body, for extra support when the hatch is closed,I think that might solve several concerns that T&TTT members have voiced. What to you think? I worked on the hatch awning today it is 11' x 44"(just a bit narrower than 4')I put it over the opened trunk of my Toyota to see what it would look like on a 4' hatch! I will have pictures shortly.Kf

A lot of great projects have started with PVC and EMT (electrical conduit).
