trailers trailers...

Postby rhltechie » Thu Sep 04, 2008 12:30 pm

ok i am really struggling with this whole trailer thing. i know i know..i am over thinking. i spoke to my dad about welding for me...but after all the parts and steel..just not sure its worth his time...

i do have a northern tool very close to me. They have a 5x8 for $529. one question is this. I did some searching in the form on these trailers and not so long ago people were complaining about the tongue as it appeared it was not an a frame but a single tube. When I look at their site, the trailer looks to me to have an A frame. have they changed their design in the recent past?

Also..following the benroy plans, has anyone modified the NT trailer like mike says to do in the gen plans?

EDIT

so i just called NT. They do have a 5x8 trailer that is prewelded that does have a single tube tongue,so apparently this was what everyone was speaking of! It's only 329!! I think i also saw in my searches that if i went with this trailer it might be a good idea to weld some members on to "make" an a frame tongue, correct? I couldnt cut it down as it is already welded, but I suppose i could just follow the gen benroy plans and add the extra width to everything i had to do. Was anyone else concerned with the axle placement of the trailer for a TD? Sound like something that makes sense outside of my brain to anyone else?

I went with the Red Trailers 5'x8' unit mainly because it has a straight tube for a tongue AND an A-frame structure attached to the first two crossmembers! Seems like the best design to me!

honestly if your dad has been welding longer than youve been alive
welding a trailer frame is about as simple as it gets

that way you you can get exactly what you need and want
if your pricing the parts at northern tool or tracker supply
your looking in the wrong place try redneck trailer supply

You will defiantly have to move the axle back. For door/fender/knee knocker clearance and weight issues.

I'd go with this one NT trailer It looks beefy enough, unless you plan on a heavy build. Just stay under 1306lbs. You could get your Dad to help ya weld a straight tube for some added strength though.

We built our BenRoy with the 5x8 Northern Carry-On trailer with no modifications, to include no axle relocation.....

Yup, we have our own Mini Shire here in P'cola. And The Elvin folks, are up in the Blue Ridge I suppose. :R

I was watching the LOR movies last week and remember how many times I had to read and re-read that famous line in the book just to understand it when I was younger.

Don't cha just love them little Hobbits... ;)

So how far is the wheel center from the rear of the trailer? It looks right!

so..if indeed this is the same trailer i have called about at NT, i should be ok with the axle placement? is 37" an acceptable distance for the axle? I would still want my dad to help me with retrofitting an tongue that was an a frame...i understand the fenders are welded on as well...i would want to rip those off too.

Another thing about this NT trailer is the axle is mounted above the springs giving your trailer a lower profile.

I'm also building on this trailer and I just didn't like the way the tongue is attached to the frame. So I had mine reinforced.

Good luck with what ever you decide to do.
