New from North Carolina

I've only done tent camping and this past trip got me to thinking about a camper. But since I don't like the idea of having to buy an expensive tow vehicle and a camper I wanted something smaller. So I found this website and seen the tear drops, and I believe I'm hooked. Looking forward to searching all the good information on this site and asking questions when I get a design finalized, save some money, and start construciton.

Well I've kinda already have a basic design but the basic modeling of Civil 3D (basically just AutoCad 3D solid shapes) it's just a rough idea at the moment. After I break down and purchase TurboCAD I will hopefully be able to nail down a good layout.

Ok here is what I have at the moment.

This model is based on a 5'x10' frame. The sleeping area will hold a queen size bed, I'm 6'4". I still haven't given any thought to storage in the sleeping quarters. But I would like to use the space between sleeping area and galley as battery storage and fuse block location as well as storage for tents, chairs, etc.

In the galley I basically want to use the "shelf" that is created under the hatch for storage of pots and pans. Then I want to have just a basic two burner propane stove on the countertop with drawers centered underneath the countertop. I want to put a cooler on the leftside and water container on the right of the drawers.

When I get a different modeling program I'll try to finalize this and make is look more realistic.

Looks like a nice plan! Have you tried Google Sketch it? Others have used it (I'm too dumb for 3D, I live in a 2D world) and it's free.

I am also 6'4", so I'm with you there! I read somewhere (not here) that batteries put off explosive gas while charging. I couldn't prove or disprove this tidbit, so decided on a battery box on the tongue. Good luck with your build, and don't forget, we like lots of pictures!

Thanks for info about the batteries. Before it's all said and done they may get moved to a box on the tongue. I'm sure I could rig up something to hold two batteries and two propane tanks.

Unfortunetly it will be sometime next summer before I can even think about starting construction, due to current employment status and also lack of covered space to build...basically I have none. So for the moment I'm going to spend a decent amount of time researching, planning, and hopefully asking questions.

Why the sharp corner on the back?

With the nice rounded profile you have on the front, you should continue that on the back. Where you have your sharp corner, add a 16 to 20" radius and you won't have any problem bending plywood around that.

As for a good modeling system, I am still looking for one. I use Turbocad, but it is just about as frustrating as it comes. PunchCAD ViaCAD isn't bad, but don't plan on making drawing with it. But the price is right. Let me know if you find a better CAD package, that one can afford. Oh, I also have Alibre, but it's too tedious.
