Awnings

Postby Kristi Foster » Tue Sep 09, 2008 3:57 am

It is quite a coincidence that after discussing my TD hatch ideas and plans to make teardrop awnings with T&TTT members, that I return home from vacation to find out that someone else beat me to it. That's not the first time I have been copied! Even my item descriptions have been copied almost word for word. Anyway, I promised I would make Teardrop Awnings and TTT awnings for members, so see a few of mine in the For Sale Search.I am offering free shipping in continental USA to members. My awnings have more structure to them than the competition's.They are replicated from an original vintage awning I own. They have facings on all the edges to give the awning a sturdy shape and form. I have also put more awnings and better pictures in eBAy , so take a look. KF

Yep it's strange how that other ebay seller is from Chico, CA. I'll even bet he's a member of this board. I'll just bet Marti probably knows her beings how they live in the same small town? ;)

Maybe I should buy one of each and then do a review and post my unbiased opinion as to which has the best quality here on the board. Naw, I wouldn't do something like that. Or then maybe I would.

Tardrop Awning

Postby Kristi Foster » Tue Sep 09, 2008 4:51 am

I noticed the same thing! Being a seamstress, my comparison would be: An unstructured jacket compared to a fine tailored suit! How do you like that? The competitve spirit, the good old American way. God Bless America. A picture speaks a thousand words.

Do you not know each other being in the same town? I have seen different pole setups with no gromets. With or without fringes. Some makers will use a nylon (or is it vinyl) cord system that slips into the C channel vs. the old twisted rope. I have also seen a little extra length of pull attached to the end of the cord or rope when you install the awning. Sure beats getting fingerprints all over the awning materials (my awning doesn't have this).

Do you offer front and rear awnings? What hardware system will you provide, or not provide. Looking at window awning support hardware, I have seen differences in cheap electric conduit connectors, and better machined hardware. All these little things make a difference, and come from EBAY sellers of awnings.

So what features would you highlight as being different, that would set you apart from others.

P.S. And which awning vendor makes custom fitted teadrop covers. I would be interested in a cover for a canned ham sized trailer!

Cliff and Vanesa,
Thanks for the interest. I AM the one in Chico that makes the awnings, but really didn't feel that this is the place to take advantage of the free advertising..
I install the right amount grommets needed for the size of the awning, but as far as the poles, they are available at most mountain/sports stores and always Cabela's or Rei online, they are adjustable tent poles. I use a smooth rope or a vinyl awning welt to feed through the "c" rail on your trailer. I don't make complete trailer covers.
In my opinion the best hardware to use for a window awning is marine top hardware as it is usually stainless steel and won't rust, always looks nice and is very strong.
As I have not purchased the "competition's" product I would never compare..or critcize!
I have been in the owner and sole operator of my own upholserty shop for over thirty years specializing in boat, auto, aircraft and trailer upholstery, (which has always oincluded awnings of all sorts). I have never had to advertise, as world of mouth advertising is always the best kind. If you are in business for yourseslf for that length of time you would need to have very good quality to stay in business.
I guess M :applause: y biggest pride is spending countless hours with my customers, to make sure that THEIR awning is as special as they are, I love to make the custom awnings and offer fringe, scallops etc, just the color and size each customer needs. I offer awnings made from any of the awning fabric from: Sunbrella.com . The great part is getting an email from each of my satisfied, happy customers when they recieve their awnings and they send praise, pictures and recommendations to their friends.
I am a avid vintage trailer person having built my own teardrop and am restoring a 1953 Crown right now, so It didn't take long to realize there was a great need for a quality awning.
As long as I am ADVERTISING" I would like to invite all to come out to the Rally on the River, at Ciasin Ranch on the Russian River, the weekend of September 27-28, I will have a display and be selling awnings at space #132. Please stop by there are going to be about 65 vintage trailer and from my experience last year, they will be spectcular!!!
If anyone would like more info on my awnings please email me at [email protected] so as to not clog up this forum, can you imagine if every handy trailerite advertised here? There would be more wooden birdhouses and crocheted kitchen towels on here than we could all use!!LOL

I am a professional, not just a darned good seamstress.. Thanks for your time, Marti Domyancic 2819 Godman ave. Chico, CA 95973 phone # 530-891-5120 [email protected]

Marti,
Thanks for the reply, and really the post was extended to both vendors. Finally a web blog, or page that explains what service you provide. Why didn't you say so in the beginning. I have added your link to my notes for future reference when I do need another awning. Pictures of your quality window hardware would be a nice option.

Kristi,
All is fair, so here's your chance to provide a description of what you offer.

Note: The forum is not a place to advertise your business, but I guess since the service offering question was raised in the Newbie section by our webmaster, one post could be allowed. Still looking for a vendor who offers affordable custom teardrop covers, ie. Bill Nut's vendor?

Hey guys, I'm not sure where you heard about me making window awnings.. I have made some replacements for folks that had their own hardware but it's not something, I advertise. More of a favor to my awning customers that have asked. I have looked into available hardware for my own projects, but it seems that each application is different depending on what you want, and how you want it to be installed on your trailer, which are all a little different. Good luck, thanks Marti

Awning

Postby Kristi Foster » Wed Sep 10, 2008 3:22 am

Hi, My thirty years as a professional dental hygienist and raising a family has kept me quite busy. Now that my daughter is in Medical School and my son is in Pharmacy School, I decided it was time for me to pursue a hobby. No not crocheting! I joined my creativity with my sewing skills and designed Vintage Look AWNINGS. I also saw a need for Teardrop awnings, so with the imput from T&TTT members I created the Vintage Look Hatch Awning.By request ,I am also designing A door side awning for Teardrops.I may eventually offer a matching window awning as well. I am totally enjoying my new hobby. KF Image
