Roof ends

I'm looking for ideas on how to finish the end of the roof where it meets the galley wall. I'm going to be using a hurricane hinge. My concern is that I will be laying my black .040 aluminum on top and it doesn't meet the upright wall at a 90' angle so I can't just slap some aluminum angle on it.

It's probably obvious but the hatch is on the right, the body with the hinge spar is on the left and the 1/2" galley wall is right in the middle.



The problem is stemming from that the cut on the profile is wrong. I was planning on putting another spar in front of the galley wall like this:



I soon realized the spar needs to follow the profile and I have it set up for the spar to be vertical where obviously I couldn't screw the hinge into it that way!

I was planning on trimming that extra bit off the profile flush with the galley wall and using the existing last spar for the hinge like in the first pic, and add that extra spar to the hatch so the length would still be right, (that 3/4" has to go somewhere!) and all this works except that the galley wall is too short which didn't matter before, but now it does...

Any ideas/Photos for this joint?

Maybe trim the galley wall down and add another spar flush with the existing? Maybe put the spar like I planned it in the second pic and use a piece of hardwood as a filler?

An easy fix is to use epoxy filler in that joint. Fill it up, sand it smooth, and then put silicone under your hurricane hinge. That should finish it up nicely.

How short is the Galley wall, 1/2",3/8'? Looks like you used 1/2" ply? an easy fix in my opinion is to rip a strip from a 1x3" with your table saw the thickness you are lacking to the width. Put a nice healthy coat of Titebond lll both on the wall and strip. Drive couple of brads here and there ,let it dry over night and finish off with your belt sander.No one will know the difference...

For the capper on the thread, I used your suggestion Greg. I found some 1/2 ply cutoffs that were already stained and poly'ed so I ripped a couple of 1/8" strips, glued and clamped them on top and it matches up nicely. Thanks for all the good suggestions!

Hey..

A master stock maker told me once and I heard it again here,that he too made mistakes . The trick of his trade was knowing how to fix them..
Glad I was able to suggest something worth while.. It's looking real good.
Where are you placing the galley side hinge spar. Are you going to butt it up against the cabinet facia..?

a hurricane hinge has to be installed (the easiest way) at 90 degrees to the roof.

The hinge flanges are 90 degrees, so to sit flat, the mount area has to be the same.

The hinge is going to screw into the spars that are just behind the galley wall. I am thinking there will be just enough space. If the hinge doesn't have enough meat to play with, I will do a wide harsh enviornment plastic hinge. The original idea was to put that spar in front of the galley wall for the hinge to screw to, then the fact that the galley wall was too low wouldn't have mattered because it would never be seen, but I had notched the profile already so there was not room to install another spar except in a way that would make it to where it would not install flat.

Glad that drawing could do something good!

I haven't decided on the stove yet, I was going to have a two burner bolted to a slide out under the countertop but the AC took that spot so I am thinking about just a one burner stove with the bottle that fits inside it that you get get from the Chinese grocery store (don't ask ) In the meantime my grandmother gave me this nifty electric one that has never been used since I will be camping with shore power for a while this should be just fine and small too!
