Rain Delay

Postby Kristi Foster » Wed Sep 17, 2008 7:49 am

I sort of got side-tracked working on the Teardrop Door Side Awning idea. I was experimenting with the universal side panel project and it turned into something that might work for both. In inclemate weather put it on the hatch with the awning for side panels and when it is nice out install the supports for a doorside awning. I bet you are really curious now! Sorry it's raining , you will just have to wait. Thanks for you continued interest in my creations.

KISS! This is Gage and Tanya's rig. Two extended tent poles, C channel on the roof line, perhaps some velcro straps to wrap around the poles to keep it from flapping around. Hard to beat the classic designs.

If you don't already have the C channel built in from the start, I am sure a little creativity with some D rings, or some type of hooks can be added to the roof to anchor the awning.

Kristi, I like the arch. Will the side against the car have a curtain coming down that can attach to the TD? then the side away from the car have a curtain with a zipper or velcro flap to close it up for privacy. It look like it could have a lot of potential. What will the dimensions be? How tall how deep, how wide? I think your on to something I'll keep watching, it beats me trying to make something. Blessings, Walt

Teardrop door side awning

Postby Kristi Foster » Thu Sep 18, 2008 7:04 am

Hi Walt,
I know it is hard to tell from the picture but the trailer side has a small flap with a pullcord for an awning rail/rain gutter over the door. If there is no rail, the flap could be pulled tight over the edge of the roof and staked down on the other side. The main intent here was to stay "cute", stay universal, and provide some rain and sun protection. The width of the awning is 36" the height and length change depending on how far apart you stake the ends down. I will be adding some "ribs" to it today so it won't sag. If there is a contoured awning rail like Gage and Finn have, the trailer side could have a full length pull cord instead of a shock cord tent stake.I will also add some D-Rings for a privacy curtain on the front side. I aim to please! KF

Kristi ....At the top of the forum header you will find "vintage plans". If you click on it you will get several projects. One of which is "Tuckaway Camper Cabana" a reprint of a 1966 Popular Mechanix article. This shows exactly what most folk are looking for. I am sorry I didn't think of it sooner. I have installed one on my tear and had a friend sew up 2 fabric shower curtains with a large hem to slide the poles in when we arrive. Mine is open topped. I got a couple pics ...

Portable Shower

Postby Kristi Foster » Fri Sep 19, 2008 10:37 am

We have a portable shower that hangs from the center of a square frame. It could easily be attached to a trailer with a flag pole and a 90 degree type bracket. Ours is just heavy black plastic (UGLY!) but I have been thinkng about making a Sunbrella cover for it. The design looks similar to what you have and they only cost about $25.00.Just a thought for a quick fix. I will take a picture of it so you can see it's potential. KF

Improvements to teardrop doorside awning

Postby Kristi Foster » Sun Sep 21, 2008 2:29 pm

I added four dowels enclosed in fabric casings for support. I also added a larger center casing for a flag pole sized dowel. This would allow for an easy instalation, just put up a flag pole bracket with a 90 degree adjustment choice. There are three choices 1) pull cord 2) flap with stake down cords 3) dowel. I have spent way too much time on this protoype! It was a challenge, but I believe I have learned from the experience. I hope you enjoyed following my progress. I need to get back to my regular awnings for now. KF
