Attaching checkerplate

Postby Steve F » Wed Sep 17, 2008 10:14 pm

I have some checkerplate that I'll be putting on the front of the camper and down the sides. The side sections will only be a few inches high but the front will be around 18" maybe taller and cover the full 5' width. Are there the same issues with this as there are with an aluminium skin regarding expansion etc (the plate is 1mm thick). I don't really want to float it there as that means additional trim around it but then I don't want it to damage the ply skin if it expands.

Any suggestions or thought on if this is an issue or not?

Cheers

If checkerplate is what we call diamond plate aluminum, I just fastened the 1/8 inch plate to plywood sides with stainless steel screws. The area covered was already coated with cured epoxy. I ran a thick bead of silicone around all edges so that when I drove the screws the silicone would squeeze out for a good seal. Remove the excess after it starts to cure but before it is fully cured. I didn't give expansion the first thought and has held up fine. I posted photos on Steve Fredericks builders site.

Yep diamond plate, yours looks like about the same as mine or possibly more. Sounds like it shouldn't be an issue :)

I used oval head screws and SS trim washers.
