My Summer Project

Postby Buffalo Bill » Fri Sep 26, 2008 1:36 pm

Hi everyone, I just completed the maiden voyage of "My Summer Project", (afterward referred to as "MSP"), and can report about 90% success. The weekend we took MSP to a local State Park was rainy. In fact it rained both nights, continuously on the second night. Needless to say my apprehension level was through the roof, expecting at least one leak and fearing a deluge. Neither drip nor flood occured, much to the relief of Mrs. Buffal Bill. Not only did the roof not leak but it withstood a direct hit from a dead branch that fell directly on the roof during the night. :? And not a single scratch on it. The branch was about as thick as a person's forearm and about 7 feet long.

Any way here's a pic : Image

I've had to pretty much do all the building in the street  since I have no driveway or garage. Makes things a little difficult considering I have to pack up all my tools and supplies everyday. It's also nearly impossible to work in the rain, and here in Buffalo we've had rain about 3/4 of the days. (You folks in Seattle must have passed the curse Eastward)

Anyway, thanks to this website and all you great people who have offered so many helpful suggestions, the MSP will be seeing many more voyages.

Hi Bill, your TD is very nice. So glad you had no leaks and especially glad the limb did no harm. You really know how to break one in.

Kudos to you for building without a garage / shelter!!! It looks really nice.

(I think we may have another one for an Allegany gathering ...)

Yes indeed! That is a nice job on your summer project.

Did you end up camping the other weekend when we got the "Ivan leftovers"?

Which state park did you do? We have been discussing a possible event at Allegany State Park (ASP), and are still weighing the interest level.

Nice to have you here!

Go Bills!

In reply to the above question the answer was yes, I do think it was the hurricane remnant weekend. The New York State park was Letchworth Park. I've been to ASP for tent and cabin camping many times, and while Allegany is nice with lots of things to do, (from Memorial Day to Labor Day), I really like Letchworth for quiet weekends as Fall approaches. I was so impressed with the cleanliness and the overall condition of the facilities that I mentioned it to the park workers at checkout. There wasn't a single cigarette butt or bottle cap anywhere.
Also I'd be interested in a gathering of tear owners at any park campground within a few hundred miles.

Incidentally there were about ten Scamp trailers at the next loop. Perhaps a club gathering? Cute little things, but I think the teardrop type is nicer.

Right on, Bill, nice job on your out-in-the-street construction effort. Now that means dedication, packing tools and supplies in and out every time you wanted to work on it (when it wasn't raining).

I got to hand it to you, anyone who incorperates some knots into their wooden trim is going down the right path. Enjoy your creation, and come out west for a vacation and attend some really big Gatherings here.

Materials in the build

The siding and hatch are both beaded birch paneling from Lowes. I used the one with no finish on it, (oddly, it was costlier than the pre-finish), because I knew I'd be adding urethane marine spar varnish. All the walls, floor and ceiling are a sandwich construction with birch-foam-luan layers. The roof exterior is FRP, (fiberglass reinforced panel), also from Lowes. Because the FRP has no UV protection I added two coats of industrial 2-part epoxy paint. The trim is cut, (somewhat sloppily), from 6 inch wide cedar, for rot resistance, that was a closeout item from ...... you guessed it; Lowes.
