1st Gathering at the 'Glyphs, Central Nevada

Hey, Gang!

Thought I'd post this here, see what kind of response/turnout to expect:

April 10-13, 2009 near Austin, NEVADA
The 1st Gathering at the 'Glyphs, Honoring the Ancestors, at the Hickison Petroglyph Recreation Area Campgrounds, just off US Hwy 50, approx. 25 miles east of Austin, NV. Step back in time and surround yourself with the history and pre-history of the Monitor Valley area of Nevada's Great Basin, stroll through the petroglyphs (many dating as far back as 10,000 years!), stand on parts of the Pony Express Route and Overland Stage Route, drive to and dip in the Hot Springs, or just kick back and enjoy the peace & quiet of the high desert solitude. With any luck, we'll have the presence & guidance of a Native American Healer. This is a BLM campground, so no reservations ... also, no registration ... just show up if you can! Come prepared for cool days and cold nights. More info from [email protected]

There are 16 established campsites in the campgrounds, each with fire-ring and table and shelter/wind-break ... two vault-type toilets ... no water, so figure on bringing in your own in real pioneer dry-camping fashion. Bringing your own firewood will be a necessity, too. There are no fees to use this CG, and it's first-come first-claimed, so if we get a good turnout, please be ready to double up on sites. Depending on which direction you come from, basic supplies are in Austin (west) and Eureka (east) or better stocks in Falon (west) and Ely (east).

And, yes ... we know it's Easter Weekend ...! If the spirits move you ...

I'll put that one down Grant....I spent 2 years drilling on a uranium project just outside Austin back in the 70's and hiked all over the place...great area, interesting history, Stokes castle etal....great vintage bar in Austin! I got a wild story from there, includes gunplay...just like out of the old west. It's a great desert area and definitely off the beaten path. Doug

I'm a petroglyph kinda guy and hopefully Joanie has those dates off from teaching.
Oh... And hope I do too. That'd be a good gathering to debut my tear, 'cause it's gonna be emblazened with petroglyphs...

No Dean...that was from an Indian Gaming convention. This one involved a mad mother with a gun and a fight with her kid. All that aside, this area would be great to go camping in. Like I said...it's off the beaten path, and a slice of Western America that most people would never see. There is a lot of history surrounding HWY 50. I got the original pony express trail on the edge of my property, now paved however. Doug

Wow! i would definitely be interested in this. I spent 4 days in Austin in 1976 with a broken down vehicle. became quite fond of the local mechanic, ray salisbury. years later when a friend spent time there he questioned the mechanic who remembered me. i was there with my dtr, and pretty much the whole town knew who we were and why we were there. ended up being towed to salt lake city for an easy fix to fuel injectors.
A truly happy person is one who can enjoy the scenery on a detour!

I'd be interested, that's only about 12 hours for me.... I usually do 'Potluck @ Pam's' about that time, but can tweak it..... if I can get out of the snow..... I'll try?

Just looked at Destinations..... Since I'm planning the trip to the Dam and it is earlier than I thought, I'll do it instead.... Grant they are too close together for this Colorado girl.... maybe another time to Nevada....

Make it another month-long adventure! ;) Start with the 'Glyph Gathering, putz around for a week-and-a-half getting to the CloudDancer Ranch gig over here on the NorCal coast, then backtrack to the Dam Gathering, and finally mosey on home. Ya only live once, ya know ... :lol: ... :lol: ... :lol: ... :lol:

This looks like a good one to me. I think I will keep it on the calendar and see how things go. I like Petroglyphs-some have said I personally knew "Fremont Man" .

Hmmm. It's an 11 hour drive, but it's up my favorite road, the 395. Of course, I'll have to finish my TD first, but I'm doing about as well as the other Dean in that department. I think we're competing for the title of World's Slowest Builder. :lol:

It is going to take Dean so long that by the time he is done with it the wood on his teardrop will petrify and be perfect for petroglyph carving.
