Any tips on painting a checkered flag on TD?

Postby Jimbo » Mon Jun 20, 2005 9:43 pm

I am going with a racing theme on my TD and plan on painting the exterior this weekend. I have the art skills of a 2 year old. Anyone have any fool proof methods for painting a checkered flag on a TD? I thought about using a grid method but wanted to ping the group before I committed to it.
Started many, finished none... Bought a TTT <Sigh> ;)

I've been in the sign industry for about 15 years. Get hooked up with someone that can cut vinyl for you. A local sign shop or if all else fails, Supersigns... It is a lot cleaner look, tons of colors and whatever you want to do can be done. It does cost $$ however, but a professionally layed out scheme will look killer. doesn't cost you to find out how much. Most paint schemes on Nascar cars and trucks are using vinyl now......Just an idea....either way, I'm sure it'll look great!!! .Doug Hodder

When I was in 6th or 7th grade I painted my BMX bike checkerboard. Man it was cool back then, nobody had one. Put on a pair of check Vans and you were it! Well, it looked cool from about 10 ft away.

Anyway, I used Monokote trim sheets that were pre printed with checks. They are self adhesive sheets for model airplanes. Kind of like contact paper with stronger adhesive. Depending on what you are trying to do it may work, the sheets are small though 5"X36".

I m also going with a racing theme, primarily NASCAR as that will be what this thing willl be used for, for the most part. I have a real simple way to get my painting done. My brother is a tattoo artist and airbrusher so all I have to do is draw out the basic design, tell him how I want it done and point at the trailer. Walla, insant mural.
As far as a foolproof way, uhh, well, give him a call.

No, I'm not ready. The pic in the avitar is pretty much the state I'm at now (avitar pic was a mock up). I am starting to do the electrical now so that I can run the wires in the roof.

I would really like to go, actually my wife was bugging me to go when we had the unofficial Texas Tear gathering. I'm not as brave as you, I will need to take a couple local trips to work out the kinks. If they do it next year, I'm definitely there.
