anyone else here play with the EEEPC?

Things that don't fit anywhere else...

There's another to think about. Will any of the typical CAD systems run on Linux? I run SoftPlan, ACAD and Sketchup. Might have to do an emergency redesign on the road, you know. But that might be asking too much.

Mike: I'm not a geek, so I don't know, but how do "write cycles" relate to actual minute by minute keystrokes? In practical terms, how long will one of these little puppies last for the average user if he surfs for a couple of hours, does his email and checks on the latest hurricane?

I don't think you want to run a CAD system on a EEE PC, but if you are thinking of a regular computer running Linux, there are several alternatives. You can run the Windows CAD software under Wine or in a Virtual Machine. Or you can look at native CAD programs such as QCAD, Varkon or KICAD.

Write cycles are not directly related to keystrokes. When you type, that goes into memory, which is just like any other computer's memory. When the operating system saves stuff to disk, that's when the flash memory write cycles happen. The scenario you detail would result in not too many flash memory write cycles.

My new Eee PC 10in. 1000H

Postby Gator Ron » Fri Sep 26, 2008 12:17 am

<img src="http://inlinethumb03.webshots.com/28034/2241694300051309503S600x600Q85.jpg" alt="My new Eee PC">

Surprised to see this thread on the Eee PC on this forum.
About four weeks ago after my road job ended and while driving back home I stopped at a Comp USA store and was walking around when this tiny computer caught my eye.....One of the sales men told me about a better computer we called the "E" and said they where out of them but should check there website online.

While checking out the Asus website I noted they they have a forum very much like this one so I immediately joined and read that the hot topic was about the 10 inch screen Eee 1000H with a 80 GB hard-drive......This computer had just recently been released here in the U.S. for $600 but already has been dropped in price because Asus re-released the same Eee 1000H computer with a new larger 160 GB drive.

Two weeks ago FedEx delivered my new 10 inch Eee 1000H with a 80 GB hard drive for $449 and boy oh boy do I love this computer!!!

Last week got to do some hiking on one of the many wilderness trails here in Florida and my VERY LIGHT Eee computer came along for the trip......Late in the afternoon before heading back to my starting point I decided to check the net to read and moderate messages for the network vintage trailer groups....Just opened up my little Eee PC......slipped in my Verizon USB modem and with-in seconds and not minutes was on-line reading messages......I have to tell you that I was miles and miles from civilization but getting on-line was in fact a breeze.

Next week the computer will get the real test when I kayak for a full day along the coast and ending the days trip two miles out in the Gulf of Mexico to one of my of my favorite islands here on the west coast.....'Indian Island'
When I do that trip will send a picture and message from the island to the forum.
..................Gator Ron

Note: Today UPS delivered a Logtech bluetooth laptop mouse for my Eee PC and yesterday bought another gig of ram so now this Eee 1000H really screams.

CAD systems generally benefit from a great deal of memory, so I wouldn't. I had one in for about a week that belonged to a client. Surfing and general reading on it would last anywhere from 3-5 hours, depending on plug-ins and such. That was the early 7" version, though.

CAD system also benefit from a large screen. I have a 17" laptop for my portable cad system. I don't think I'd like CAD on an 8.9" screen.

I did pick up a 14.1" laptop, I'm curious if CAD would work on that sized screen.

I've done a great deal of detail graphics work (similar requirements to CAD) and you end up doing a whole lotta zoom-in, zoom-out on anything less than large screen. It gets old real fast. If you're in a stable location, you could plug in an outboard monitor for just this purpose. Or make do on the road. I'm not sure I'd want to make it my primary CAD/graphics machine tho.

I just now caught this thread but I've taken a few of these apart and modified them quite a bit. If anyone has any questions, let me know by PM and I'll try to help.
I originally had the 701 when it first came out but have since sold it. I did a number of mods that included the touchscreen, more ram (not really a mod), adding bluetooth, adding a wireless N wifi card, overclocking, and adding a ton of extra onboard flash memory.

Hello Netbooker's;
I haven't been checking in much lately...got laid off 3-4 weeks ago and that messes up my browsing time.
I'm still liking my Acer One...haven't had any problems with the wireless going away.
There was a hiccup that ticked me off...I worked quite a bit to get the AcerOne to hookup with my Razr phone and get on the internet. I had that all working well...but then the O/S did an automatic update and that took out my cellphone connection.
In the mean time I had been checking out installing a full copy of Ubuntu Linux...when I came across a new Ubuntu-eee version that includes the "Remix" desktop for netbooks? Has anyone else tried it on either an eee or and AcerOne? It installed very easily on the AcerOne and is reasonably quick...although I miss the super fast, 20sec, bood time of the Linpus Linux that came on the AcerOne. The nice thing about the ubuntu-eee distro is that it is a full version of Ubuntu with all the tools & tricks...so it's way easier to configure and install programs, tools.

I got my Dell mini 9 today... Keyboard will have a bit of a learning curve but not too terrible. Overall it should do what I need - small and lightweight computer for taking notes in class.

Zen,

Accept the linux machine. Give it a fair chance. It'll do email and browsing very nicely. but be sure to enable the full desktop... here:

If after you give it a fair chance, and you don't like it, then do this...

Zen, I agree with Mike--give the Linux machine a try.

I bought the Linux 900 intending to convert it to XP. Never made the switch. In fact, I never even enabled advanced desktop until I'd had the machine about two months...I was just too busy, and easy mode functioned just fine. But I do like advanced desktop now that I've enabled it. You'll find the version of Linux on your machine to be very Windows-like, without all of the Windows issues.

The Linux machine is easy to use, and did everything I needed it to do right out of the box. It would do even more if I had time to play with it and install additional software. It's been hassle free, nearly instant boot up and shut down, and runs like a trouper. I've taken it on the road (NYC) twice, and schlep it around town to use at hotspots. Performance is great. I was carrying it at work because I use it during chemo infusions, and had to set it up on its own desk because so many people wanted to 'play' with it. Now my old IT boss is going to buy himself the 1000...

Enjoy it!

900 linux

Postby zen » Sat Oct 18, 2008 11:10 am

Thanks,
I feel a little better about it now. Some questions please. I have xp in my home computer. Can I do the same things with Linux? Email, word, surf ex.. with out having to learn a lot of new stuff. I'M not computer smart and can work well with the home xp.
I'm not sure what Linux and xp differences are or what it even means. I went on the web and am more confused now than ever.
I guess I'M not the sharpest tool in the shed but I'M trying. Any help is appreciated.
