Design, Lumber and Karma

Postby davidrn » Sat Oct 11, 2008 6:30 pm

Hello, I belong to another forum that regularly gets after new members asking questions covered well in the forum. So I have done aprox 25 hours or more of reading about TDs.
Back in the winter I saw the travel channel story, and it planted the seed. This spring a simple 4x8' was for sale locally. The wife agreed to go out and see it, my idea was to have both of us crawl in, if she become claustrophobic I would just forget the idea. Well, the trailer was small and she didn't mind the 4' size, so I decided building something bigger would be my plan.
I found a pop up trailer frame, 6'2" x 9'3", about 60" between the tires.
I decided my woodworking skills are better than average and I would build a CabinCar type vehicle.
So off to my local discount lumber yard, the only dealer of reasonable priced 1/8" plywood. Well checked weekly for 3 weeks , no restock. I asked and was told I could find some down 25 miles away at another branch. Well, yeah they had 3 pieces, the bottom of the bundle. However the trip became worth it when I saw 58" square 1/8" Baltic Birch. I bought half the pile, 5 sheets without any footballs...

Got home and realized the design I wanted would not work with the lumber I found. So Karma dictated a design change. I decided on a Woody Grumman/ Modenaire type TD. So, I cut the sides of the trailer and ended with a 49" wide by 9'3" frame... now I will have fenders.
I went about 9" total over the edges, giving me a 58" width and an a little over an inch between the 3/4" plywood floor and the tires.

I have started the wall construction, using my woodworking process and not being in a rush. Want to be done by 4Th of July group camp out.
I used an 8' and a 2' piece of luan and laminated some old Walnut thick veneer on the bottom 20" and above the Baltic Birch. The two thickness's of 1/8" should give me a nice base for a sandwich wall.
I am awaiting for Tues or Wed when my CPES will arrive.
My plan is to prefab the wall, doors, trim all on the flat before standing up.
I really appreciate all the details in members pic's. I have the design steps in my head laid out. I built my pole barn from the same research method, I think I have a great , although over enginered barn .

Only question is without fiberglass tape, is just CPES enough to use , with a spray urethane, after contruction is complete. Will the CPES adhere the trim after a few coats? To both the walls and the trim..Or do I use Gorilla glue over the CPES walls?
Thanks for having such a busy group, the reasearch sure is easy.

hi David, sounds like you are going about things correctly...I always encourage LOTS of readin' and researchin'....following Karma is always smart since not doing so can bring the Ghia down on ya...

as to your question...my familiarity with CPES is limited to what has been posted here BUT, if I were to use it, I would go with a couple or three coats and follow up with either a base/clearcoat auto paint or a marine brightside/topside paint...or if the urethane is wanted, I would use MinWax ClearShield, a heavy bodied, outdoor rated urethane...I have used this product on several outdoor furniture jobs with excellent results...now, my actual advise would be to skip the CPES, go directly to a non-blushing epoxy(3 coat min)(I use WWW.RAKA.com ) and then the paint..once again, the base clearcoat(or just the clearcoat if doing a woody) or the marine brightside/topside paint, which is a urethane based paint...good luck and keep us informed...oh yeah, don't forget to take a lotta pics...we just luv 'em..doanchano

Image to the playground David. I sure wish I could have gotten 1/8" Baltic Birch without footballs. I ended with 3/8" and it worked great.

Yes to the CPES or epoxy. I don't know if CPES is a good glue since it is intended to penetrate. You can call Rot-Doctor and ask that one.

Have fun and keep us in pictures so Aunti's bubble doesn't get outta whack. ;)

Welcome,
Just a piece of advice. If its you and your wife using the Teardrop make her 5' wide. I did make mine 5' and last nite was our maiden voyage and we had plenty of room w/ our queen size memory foam mattress and it was quite comfortable.
Just my 2 cents. Lol. At my age I need comfort and room.
Good luck on your build,
Bill :applause:
Hope to see you on the road.

re: Karma based design...and a price brag

Postby davidrn » Sun Oct 12, 2008 4:51 pm

Thanks for the comments...
Wider...yes! I am going 58" wide...the max with fenders...my original plan was 75"..but the availibilty and price of the Baltic Birch decided the issue.
I bought my Luan for 6.59 a sheet...and the BB for 6.99....There is a designer lumber yard in town, $32 a sheet for 1/8" BB was out of my ballpark at first.. But in Worcester,Ma the cabinet... scratch and dent place... always seems to have deals...except for some reason I have never seen BB. Hence the Karma. Boy I lucked out, I am worried now, I bought 5 sheets that were perfect and left the other 5 in the store for someone else, hope the Karma comes back to me with an uneventful build..
I will start on pic's soon. I took a few pics of the frame, before I cut it down to 5' wide.
