Trailer rust

Postby rhltechie » Tue Oct 14, 2008 2:04 pm

Hi All,

While I was dropping my trailer off at my dad’s last night to get the tongue welded, I noticed that one of the fenders of the carry on had a little spot where the paint had chipped and it had rusted (no telling how long that thing has been sitting out in their open area at NT). I know this is going to bug the crap out of me it is not fixed. What’s the best way for me to take care of it? The fenders didn’t really look that great either. Looked rather faded. I had toyed with removing them, but decided to leave them on. They look like they need a good coat of black paint or something. Ideas?

thanks as always!

Hi Mandy

chipped paint on the fenders, rust spot, the real bane of towing a trailer, fenders are going to take a beating. There have been strings, of late that spoke of using plastic film similar to how new cars a shipped now-a-days or using a strip of diamond plate, or makeing up a bra for the leading edge of the fender......but in reality, at the end of the season, if the little chips and the spots of rust are bothering you, you'll remove the fenders sand them down and repaint, a bit of touch-up paint might work for a while but..... you'll repaint. Just remember, as long as you get out on the road, those little chips are going to be there, you'll just have to decide how often your going to bring them back to looking new.

Hey Mandy,
I went from this...

With a wire brush on my drill, a product called Ospho from Ace Hardware, and a topcoat of Rustoleum.

If the rust isn't big or hasn't pitted the metal, I would just go with the wire brush and a coat of Rustoleum. Good luck.

I don't want to hijack the thread, but this answers Rigsby's question and Mandy, there are several links to "rust inhibitors" on about page 11 or 12.
