Sealing exterior edges of plywood during construction.

Postby rlphoto » Sat Jun 25, 2005 1:25 pm

Hi gang! geting ready to start sawing today! I am going to use all BC 1/4 in plywood on the exterior of my trailer, and want to seal the edges during assembly. I havent decided what I am going to paint the exterior shell with yet.

What can I go buy at the home depot tonight when I go and get my 1/4 plywood that would do a good job, and be compatible with what ever exterior finnish I want to use? I am going to use tubes of PL to glue the plywood to the studs.

Latest trailer design....

rpphoto,
If the edges will not be exposed or you are going to paint over the ply you might try this one.
Run a small bead of quality painter chaulk along the edge and then force it into the edges as best you can, clean up the excess. This worked very well on 1/2" & 3/4 " plywood, back when I was making exterior signs. It fills any voids and prevents water from wicking into ply.

Norm's comment about filling the voids is a must. If you use cabinet grade ply there will be no voids but you must go around the edges with a Varathane like Min-Wax Spar varnish which will keep moisture out. Don't get it on the areas where you will be gluing as it will make for a weak bond. If you do these preliminarys you will have something to pass on to your Grandchildren.

Happy brushing,

I'm going to fiberglass the outside of my trailer so I'm going to use epoxy resin to seal the edges. I'll fill voids with a putty made from epoxy and sawdust.

I've used the PL Urethane glue on my project and like the way it works. I've also used Gorilla glue and like it too.

Being that you are a photographer I guess we can count on pictures?!? :)
