Yep and I belong to three local freecycles, too. But I still don't find as much as when I used to drive into town every day.

On the plus side (and somewhat off-topic), I finally acquired garage space to build in, so I'm looking for pop-up frames and windows now. Yea!

One of the best places to get CHEAP building materials is any Habitat Re-Store. In case you haven't heard of them: They take excess stuff that is donated to Habitat for Humanity and sell it to raise money for the cause. There are all kinds of used and NEW building supplies of every type. We buy everything there that we can. Examples: countertops at $1 per foot, storm windows-$5, doors $10, shutters $5, replacement globes for chandeliers-.50 to 1.50. I got a granite double sink counter for the bathroom for $40. They also have all kinds of used furniture if you are interested in that. I like to look for unusual vintage lamps there. It is also a great place to get flooring of all types. Anyway, if you have one near you, check it out!!

I found a great white enamel kitchen sink at the Habitat Re-Store but I wasn't sure if it was the right size. It was gone when I got back.

But we have gotten some good stuff there. I needed a solid-core door for a closet that will become a gun safe and got one for fifteen bucks. A real nice bathroom faucet that Lowe's gets $29 for, they had for five.

Salvage is also big business - http://www.aoarchitecturalsalvage.com/ The stuff here is very high priced but sometimes it's the only place I can find what I need and the stuff piled in their attic is not so dear as the stuff on the showroom floor. F'rinstance, I needed a replacement porch column. A new one which was close but would need a lot of work to make it fit is about $150. I found an exact match that was even the right length for $100. They also have the wood paneled interior doors that I need, at prices similar to new ones but real wood, not that pressed crap.

Yeah Habitat Re-store

My porch lights $5.00 each
Image

The 4" ceramic tiles 5 cents each
Image

My bar sink for the tear with the faucets $ 7.00
The new prefinished cabinet doors in my album $2.50 each and the spring loaded hinges were 35 cents each.
There are probably 30 -35 other small items and supplies that I bought there.

We remodeled our home in 2000 and purchased windows doors appliances bath and kitchen fixtures, flooring and carpet and hundreds of other items and supplies. We felt so blessed and a little guilty at the money we saved we volunteered as sales assistants every Saturday from 8 to 3 for the better part of a year. We met and were able to help guide and instruct hundreds of shoppers and met a lot of really nice folk.

Habitat is a great organization people helping people. Kinda reminds me of a forum I know

Between Habitat and trash piles , we should be able to build a "Manor" for like $137.48... :o
Maybe we need a contest , an old fashioned Scavenger hunt to see who can make the Best re-cycled(cheapest) TD or TTT... Got all winter to look...

Thank god im not the only one with deep pockets and short arms. So far ive managed to spend less than £100 on my build, by using mainly salvaged items. These include
Axle--from old cargo trailer
Door--from scrapped caravan
Door widow--from caravan retailers throwing out pile
Side window-- from RV manufacturers throwing out pile
Roof spars--cut down stud wall from office at work
Hatch hinge-- from caravan window in salvage companies yard
Alloy wheels-- from smashed up Renault car on Ebay
Plus numerous other items that i wont pay over the odds for

So much usable material is thrown out every day... :o It's just Amazing!!!
We've found everything around here from free boat trailers, building materials, and small appliances that still worked...lamps and light fixtures are too common... we saw some nice looking speaker cabinets on the curb...probably the speakers went bad , so they tossed the whole thing... a few quick modifications and you'd have a nice small TD cabinet.. Now if we only had a TD use for all those bicycles... ;)
