Durability Of The Folding Trailers

Postby Franklin » Tue Nov 04, 2008 8:05 am

So if we choose the metal frame, if we go with a folding frame is that as durable as the plain welded one? We thought about the bolt together but isn't the one that folds a combination of bolt and weld? If choosing the frame to build on is this complicated, well, to me anyway, I just hope the choices get easier. I just feel that the frame is like the foundation of a house so am probably over thinking it - I over think everything so this will probably really be a process! :? Cathy

I used used the HF folding 1740Lbs, but even it is over-kill unless your building a true off-road TD to be pulled by your Jeep or such....
Look underneath any of the classic tears built in the 50's or 60's and you will be surprised at how little there is to the frame, but much of the strength comes from the combination of the frame and the rigidity of the tear connected to it.

I have the same trailer as Al that I use for landscaping materials and my woodworking hobby. Due to space constraints, I do leave it in the original "foldable" condition for storage. This trailer has been abused at times with how I loaded things on it and total weight carried, and it has stood up well.

That said, I will be using a custom-fabricated trailer with a torsion axle for my build because it will ride smoother and can be built lighter than the HF trailer. Also, I plan to use some automotive wheels and tires and these are not easily adaptable to the HF axle.

Cathy, did you see the Generic Benroy Plans? The method to make the trailer rigid described there applies to Harbor Freight trailers too, and after you bolt the plywood to it, the frame will stop racking(just make sure the frame is square first).
