Battery Box Venting

Postby Toytaco2 » Tue Nov 04, 2008 6:59 pm

I've searched the forum and found good information on the need to vent a battery installed in a tongue box, but I haven't found much on the the best ways to do it. I plan to compartmentalize the tongue box shown in the pic and use one side for my battery and the other side for a CTEK smart charger. I would seal off the charger from the battery compartment to isolate it from sparks, etc and perhaps vent the charger compartment also if needed for heat dissapation. But, I'm looking for ideas (preferably inexpensive) on how to actually vent the battery compartment. What size do the vent holes need to be and should there be more than one (ie top and bottom of the compartment. What size tubing/materials? Pics of how any of you accomplished this would be great if you have them. Here's a pic of my tongue box setup:

For that box I would just get some cheap plastic marine louvered vents. Small should do and you can seal them.

Any marine repair shop can get them and they are about $5.

I plan to carve some ducks to incorporate in my tear build and have thought I would name my tear the "TearDuck" when I complete it. Still very early though so that may change with time.

My battery charges off my TV. My tongue box is sealed on top but there are a few ~3/8" holes in the bottom. It allows some air movement and I've never smelled acid grom charging when I open the box.

I saw this the other day. I forget who posted the link to the shedworkers forum, but it was on there...

The batteries are in the floor, and if you look closely, the box is vented. :)

I have the same box on my trailer. I put a 2" round house vent in the side facing the trailer. I also put my battery cutoff in the front and added some draw latches to keep it shut.

Satch...I hadn't seen a pic of your tear at this state of completion. Maybe I missed it. It really looks great!

I don't charge when driving, so didn't bother to vent the box. Haven't had any issues when connected in use while camping. I also disconnect it when traveling. Doug

Thanks Doug, I don't charge from the tv, I have an on board maintainer that I flick on when needed. Not sure if I needed the vent, but better safe than sorry 8)
