Hadrian's Wall Story:

Some time ago, there was a Texan living in the house opposite me and I took him to my favourite place on Hadrian's Wall, Housesteads Fort. This is a pretty complete Roman fort up to about ground level - all the stones higher than that got 'robbed' by later locals. There is a particularly interesting 20-seat communal latrine - sorta like a Roman coffee shop, but with stuff going out not in!

So, anyway, me and this Texan were sitting in the North gateway swinging our legs over the drop and looking out at Scotland. I asked him if he could guess why his hand was in a groove - when I told him it was because so many Roman carts had rolled over that stone 2000 years ago that they'd worn the groove, I could see his brain just go into overload and fuse out. Plus he whipped his hand away so fast, you'd think all those carts were still rolling over it.

He spent at least the next 24 hours in a state of shock and told everyone where his hand had been - he was even showing them his hand, as though they would see the imprint of the stone on it.

So taking him there wasn't a wasted journey!
