Anybody new-car shopping?

Postby caseydog » Wed Nov 12, 2008 7:21 pm

With car sales in the tank, and GM on the verge of melt-down, I'm wondering what kind of outrageous deals are being made on new cars.

Anyone have any first-hand stories?

I am actually seriously considering a new extended cab Colorado but am not sure how good a deal I can get yet. I was planning on buying an 06 or 07 model in late 2009 or early 2010 as I hate to buy anything new. If the deal is just too good to pass up I may have to do it though.

I work at a car dealership. I bring lots of reading materials with me to get through the day. I think that says it all.
To answer your question though, I haven't seen any "outrageous" deals out of our place. A while back we had the GM employee pricing sale. We were pretty busy during the last few days of that. Not much happening since then.

I read something the other day about that --"About 3,800 dealerships need to close this year just to allow stores to maintain the same sales rate of a year ago, the study added. Yet the National Automobile Dealers Association said last week that the number of U.S. dealers will shrink by only 300 to 600 by the end of 2008."

I bought a 2008 Escape Limited in April. I got about $2750 in rebates and the prices was $150 below invoice (before rebates). Not a "bad" deal but not spectacular.

I'd like to try it again today and see if there is any difference.
The Escape gets over 30mpg Highway (V-6 gas) so maybe it's not in the Guzzler catagory that are hard to move.

I noticed that the service charges have begun to increase at the dealer. Oil Change has gone up by $10. Gotta make money somehow.

I should start doing my own again.

The sales guys look really bored and frustrated.

makes sense that the biggest discounts would be on the hardest to move (gas guzzlers)..

Now, i don't think it is gas prices anymore.. the banks have money, but people are reluctant to take on new debt, wondering if they will have a job to pay it back.

For those looking to buy, here's a handy reference guide to tow ratings of vehicles by year, make and model. Of course most are way oversized to pull teardrops. :)
