How wide for a queen mattress

I know a queen mattress is 60 inches wide but I was wondering if there needs to be extra room for the mattress. I noticed on my own bed that it widens a little when I am on it.

Also what is a good cheap mattress, under $150, to put in a teardrop.

Queen mattress is 60in wide. You don't need extra room but you can out it there if you want.

I got a 6in foam mattress 4.5in foam 1.5in memory foam from Wal-Mart, I don't remember what I paid for it though. You pretty much have to use a foam mattress so that you can fold it up and get it into the door.

Gage used an innerspring mattress by using a removable access panel at the bottom of his galley. He is old and wise.

Cheap beds are generally uncomfortable, the younger you are the less important it is.

A 5' wide teardrop isn't 5' wide in the inside, so a regular size mattress will usually fit really well.

When building, if you make your teardrop 5' wide on the inside, the cost isn't much different than if it was 5' on the outside, unless you are using 5' wide plywood.

My outside is 60" and with the sandwich walls the interior is 57". I bought a queen foam mattress from Ikea and plan to trim 4" off of it to fit. And I'm with Steve, pay a little extra on the mattress instead of going cheap, your back will thank you in the morning.

Paid $225. Worth every penny. 8" queen mattress(5" high density, 3" memory foam) with a cover from Walmart.




The mattress is actually folded and comes in a box with wheels. When you cut the plastic bag and open it up it bounces open into a queen bed. My cabin was actually a little smaller with the front spars but the great thing about the foam is that it did great in a tighter spot. had no problem around the door framing either.

no. 1 tear was made same width inside as mattress (60"). Tight fit made it hard to put sheets on mattress... this one is an inch wider.... still tight and hard to put sheets on.

Logically, it has to be easier..... but does not seem so.

I have the exact same one lie Barb, I cut off about 3", cause the foam was pushing the doors.You don't want it too tight!

After Sly made me put the sheets on once the mattress compartment instantly became 62" x 82" on all production models. So easy to do when building so hard to live with after.

I got mine at Ikea. 8" queen with springs and is able to be folded. I think we paid $199. They may have some cheaper ones. I can't wait to use mine.

There will be about 60-3/4" of width inside my cabin. I have an Ikea queen sized foam mattress for the teardrop that's still packaged up like a big sausage. They have a sizable choice of models, thicknesses, and prices. I like that they include removable washable covers. Well worth checking out if a store is near you.

I built my teardrop around a queen size mattress with about 1/2" inch extra on each side. I found alot of extra expense in the extra couple of inches on the outside materials wise.

The getting-the-thing-in-the-door is a factor too unless you are using foam. I am using a "real" mattress but I have an extra wide door. It WILL go in

I realized that my AC unit that sticks in at my feet was not going to be over mattress level after I lowered the galley counter not thinking about the interior repercussions, so I was forced to use a Full size bed rather than the queen size to compensate, but in the end I am happy with this as it will give me 3" on each side extra to change sheets, or build a little hidey hole with a pad on top.

If I would do again, I think 60" exterior width would be nice to accommodate a Full Size bed with 1 1/2" extra on each side. IKEA is a good suggestion for the foam ones.

I was looking to do the same thing with the Walmart mattress and wondered if this would be an easy thing to do. I would also have to shorten this matress by a few inches. The mattress I'm looking at is the Canopy Queen 8". Does this have a cover (nonremoveable) over the foam? Could you remove the cover without causing problems with the mattress? Did you have any problems cutting down this mattress? Thanks in advance.
