The photos make me miss Deutschland! I always loved the first snow of the year. So different from the Southern U.S. (Alabama)!

Mike,
My friend in Nuernberg sends them every year. I miss the Glühwein more! We used to get it all the time when we went to the market.

Make your own Glühwein!!! It may not be 100% identical, but after the 2nd one, you won't even know it!!!

Lets see if I can find some ingredients... ah, here we go...

This is a German version of mulled wine.

When I was 18 and stationed in Heidelberg, Germany I encountered a cold that was strange to someone from southern California. Fortunately I found glühwein. It was a joy to walk into a warm bar and order this tasty mulled wine, bursting with spicy flavors. Here is one of my favorite versions.

Ingredients

* 4 quarts dry red wine (zinfandel, merlot, burgundy, etc.)
* 1 pint brandy
* 1 cup sugar
* 6 cinnamon sticks
* 12 cloves, whole
* 1/8 tsp allspice
* 1/8 tsp mace
* 2 oranges, sliced
* 1 lemon, sliced

Directions

1. Pour the wine into a large pot and begin heating over low heat.
2. As it begins to warm, add sugar and spices. Stir until sugar is dissolved.
3. Add the brandy.
4. Heat thoroughly, but do not allow to boil!
5. Add the lemon and orange.
6. Steep for about 1 hour over low heat.
7. You may add more sugar during this time if desired, stirring well so it disolves.
8. Serve hot and garnish with orange slices. A stick cinnamon could also be used.

Yup All over Germany has them. Even the German "Lidl" grocery stores have them here

Sherry that gluhwein has many names to it here. And known throughout entire Europe.

In Scandinavia as Glög, glögi, toti - Here its known as glögi, toti or hehkuviini.

Good drink too no matter what language, here also its mainly served around Advent but its also great served all winter thru.

Here is our recipe for it.

Traditional Finnish hot Christmas drink.
SERVES 12

Ingredients
1 (750 ml) bottle red wine
2-3 tablespoons madeira wine (optional)
1/2 cup sugar (to taste)
1/3 cup raisins
1-2 cinnamon sticks
5-6 whole cloves
1 orange, rind of
1/4 cup blanched slivered almond (optional)
1/4 cup vodka, to spike it up (optional)
Directions
1In a large kettle, combine all the ingredients except the vodka. Heat slowly, until the drink is steaming hot. Stir every now and then, and taste with a spoon whenever you feel like it. Do not let the drink boil, just keep it warm. Before serving, add vodka if you wish. Servings: 1 to 6.

I got to spend one Christmas in Freidberg Hessen. it snowed of course. It was a nice place to live. My landlord kept a crock of mulled wine on the bar in the basement party room/bar. It would warm the cockles of your heart for sure.

Also here is the Non Alcoholic version if you like:

250 ml good quality red grape or blackcurrant juice (or half of both)
about 3 - 5 cm piece of cinnamon stick
2 - 3 whole cloves
2 allspice berries
5 - 7 whole cardamom seeds
very small piece of fresh ginger or a pinch of ginger powder
few thin strips of fresh orange peel
for serving:
5 - 6 almonds
about 6 - 8 dark raisins
With a vegetable peeler, peel a few thin slices of the zest of a thoroughly washed and brushed orange — preferably use organically grown fruit. Scald and peel the almonds.

Pour the juice(s) in a small saucepan. Add the cinnamon stick, cloves, cardamom seeds, allspice berries, ginger and the orange peel strips. Bring the mixture just to the boil and turn off the heat. To enhance the flavour, allow the spices steep in the hot juice for a few minutes. Reheat before serving, if necessary.

Drop some almonds and raisins in a serving mug or a tea-glass with a spoon in it and strain the hot glögg over. Serve immediately.
Serves 1.

Warms you up for sure Steve. And the home recipes vary from place to place. Some stronger than others. The odor and taste is great.

Sitting around a campfire with this or home fireplace and watching the snowfall is a great setting.

Ahhh Mike I,ll go look during the day to see if they have them cookies for you. They are only available at Lidl. They should have all kinds of Xmas goodies from Germany there shortly if not yet.
