Triker building a trailer

Postby jimsjinx » Sat Nov 22, 2008 4:18 pm

Hi, I am an avid motorcyclist in Alabama. :) Currently building a trailer to haul behind my Motortrike, which is powered by a GL1500 Goldwing. I was gonna use a cartop carrier for the box,but hey, I'm a professional woodworker, so I am trying to adapt the teardrop design into my trailer. The size will be cosiderably smaller than what you guys build, but I suspect the basic idea is the same. Wish me luck, and I'll let the other Goldwing guys know about your site. Lotsa trailer guys there, who love the idea. See ya round, jimsjinx

There are a few builds in the Hall of Fame above that were built to be pulled by motorcycles. I can also remember a few threads covering the subject as well as a bunch that discuss building ultralight that would also be helpful. I believe you will find some helpful info in Sdtripper2's Index in the link above. Post pictures as you build as I'm sure many forum members will learn from your build and post if you come up with questions as these folks are very talented and will in to share it you ask. Good luck with your build.

I have a design for a Cub-shaped baggage trailer to go on a 40"x48" HF trailer if you're interested:

The dotted line is a 'full-size' 10ft x 4ft Cub trailer. The little one is sized to get two side panels out of one 8x4 sheet:

PM me your email address if you want the PDFs of geometry and construction.

I built "Itty-Bitty" on a 40x48 HF trailer. It weighs in around 300 pounds so it should be towable with a GoldWing. It sleeps one person (the floor is the size of a twin matreass). My personal choice until the divorce was a HD Sporty; but I don't see why the 40x48 coudn't be expanded to sleep two(all though cozy) and still be towed behind a GoldWing.

 Just so we are on the same page. I am shooting for a trailer that just hauls cargo. We don't intend on sleeping in it,(although if I keep playing in the shop so late I may need to!) Anyway, I love the retro look of the drop, and I'm pretty sure now I've found all of you, I'm leaning in that direction!! Keep it coming!!! jimsjinx

The fellow I camped next to at the Barber Vintage Motorcycle Festival in October had this rig. He said he bought a plan for it and it is built on the small Harbor Freight trailer.

There is a full screen under that snap on vinyl cover. He snaps it off on nice nights for a view of the stars and air flow.

Is tow rig is a Suzuki Bandit 1200 with a Texas Side Cars hack.

He was not a small man. He stood at least 6 foot or more and he said he fit with plenty of room.

Oh I just saw your post about just needing a cargo trailer. I guess the basic shape of his trailer could be of interest to you even if the sleeping compartment is not of interest.

I will also go ahead and mention my friends trailer that was pulled behind a Honda ST1100 from Murfreesboro, TN to Alaska above the Arctic Circle then across Canada and back down the Eastern US coast.

It is a factory built tent trailer but it is on a fiberglass cargo tub. It is really a pretty neat design.

Image to the playground. I think teardrops look wonderful behind a motorcycle. Just remember to keep it just large enough to duck in if the weather is nasty.

Enjoy the site and remember to keep the bubble oil level with lots of :pictures: :pictures: :pictures: We do extra nagging for people who do things different. :R

:? So much info! It's starting to look like it'll be pretty pricey to do what I wanted to do, I'm still on the fence with the drop vs cartop carrier mounted to my frame. I hate to admit it but the cartop carrier is alot cheaper and lighter than a teardrop. Oh well, still thinkin'. I have shared this place with my Goldwing friends on "SteveSaunders goldwing forums." Check it out, a nice place to make friends, like here! jimsjinx

Wow, this looks like the perfect size to tow behind this...(as per my introductory post)

Hi jimsjinx,

Welcome to the forum. Looks like you've been shown alot of great ideas, plus your cartop carrier idea. So, now all you got to do is decide, how much you want to spend and how complicated you want it to be.
When you figure it out, be sure and post some pictures, so we can see what you've come up with.

See you around.

jimsjinx,

I don't know how everyone else does it, but I set up a free Photobucket account.

http://photobucket.com/

Upload the photos to your computer.

Copy and resize the pictures as you save them into your Photobucket account. The resizing is important because you don't want a photo to show up larger than most people's monitors because it makes it difficult to see them, without scrolling across.

Then copy them into your posts.

It works for me. Just takes a few minutes to set up an account at Photobucket. There are several other free photo hosting sites, but this one works really well.

So use the 'forgot my password' option on the login screen and get them to send you a password (has a pesky nephew logged on without you knowing?).

But there are plenty other free photo hosting sites - flickr, photolava, etc.
