My trailer came with a flat 4-pin running light plug and my tow car at the time already had a round-7 pin receptical. So I had to change something. A four to seven pin adapter would have been the easy way, but I converted the trailer to 7-pin and am glad I did. One of the extra wires charges my trailer battery when towing. Another could be used for trailer back up lights if I decide to add those. No electric trailer brakes, so for now I just use five of the wires. Another advantage of the 7-pin setup is that it has a locking device to hold the plug in the receptical.
Even if only the four running light wires are used initially, I think it would be good to have the 7-pin setup and the capability to easily add a battery charge wire later.
